Never Never, Shake, Baby EP

| Being relatively new to Southern
California, I haven’t been exposed to the ‘Slacks’ three
prior releases, including the somewhat lauded The Scene’s
Out of Sight. So, for me, their five-song EP, Never Never Shake,
Baby, serves as an introduction to this eight-year-old band.
Their indie pop sound is immediately evident on the opening tracks, “Annie
Oakley” and “Iron Anchor.” Both are a high-energy
relief from the stagnant sounds of today’s “new rock,” though
not entirely fresh. Singer Tim Scanlin’s vocals bring to
mind a bit of Billie Joe, while not sounding completely like
a retread. Showing they’re not a one-note band, “Shining
Jewels” is an acoustic reworking of a track from their
previous album. It floats along like most love songs should,
with vocals sung, not screeched. They close the EP with a live
track, “I Hope This Makes It Easier For You,” and
a roughed-up cover of the Gary Myrick song “She Talks In
Stereo.” As a whole, this EP will serve their fans well
as a stopgap before the next album. As for this reviewer, I might
just have to check out the Actionslacks’ earlier works
for a better picture. |
