The Avalanches
Since I Left You
(London-Sire Records)

Here to bury you under a mound of fresh samples and dope beats, The Avalanches hail from the seemingly unsnowy Australia. Equal parts DJ You, DJ Me and Daft Punk, The Avalanches blend strange samples from god knows where with effective house beats. The layer effect is sometimes hypnotic, and always impressive.

The album has a theme of travel running through it, with tracks like “Pablo’s Cruise” and “Little Journey.” The standout cut is single “Frontier Psychiatrist,” in which they weave a tale of a school boy deemed mad by a country doctor. Madonna was so impressed with these guys that she allowed them to sample “Holiday,” supposedly the first time she’s ever let anyone sample one of her songs. No doubt they’ll be producing her next album. Last year the band also did a nice little remix of Badly Drawn Boy’s album opener, “The Shining.” These guys might single handedly put Australia back on the musical map, even if their seasons are all backwards. Since I Left you is a highly enjoyable concoction.
