The Boggs
We Are The Boggs We Are

Oh brother, where art thou?...And why have you forsaken The Boggs? The album cover looks deceptively similar to the first Faces record, but the music comes across more like a drunken amateur night for aspiring bluegrass musicians. Traditional hillbilly, country, and blues music is a sacred part of the American folk tradition. This does not necessarily make the genre untouchable, but it does demand a certain skill, sensitivity, and knowledge of the tradition. As for the latter, I can’t be the judge. But the lack of skill and sensitivity seem to be all too obvious on this record. To their credit, they are champions of a noble sound, and occasionally they strike an authentic chord; but for the most part, the affected vocals of Jason Friedman and the “nostalgic” recording styles used painfully throughout the entire record seem like a dirty trick. Sorry fellas, keep practicing.--
