We Are The Boggs We Are

| Oh
brother, where art thou?...And why have you forsaken The Boggs?
The album cover looks deceptively similar
to the first Faces record, but the music comes across more like
a drunken amateur night for aspiring bluegrass musicians. Traditional
hillbilly, country, and blues music is a sacred part of the American
folk tradition. This does not necessarily make the genre untouchable,
but it does demand a certain skill, sensitivity, and knowledge
of the tradition. As for the latter, I can’t be the judge.
But the lack of skill and sensitivity seem to be all too obvious
on this record. To their credit, they are champions of a noble
sound, and occasionally they strike an authentic chord; but for
the most part, the affected vocals of Jason Friedman and the “nostalgic” recording
styles used painfully throughout the entire record seem like
a dirty trick. Sorry fellas, keep practicing.-- |
