The Cure
Greatest Hits
(Electra Records)

Okay, I’ll say it. This set sucks. Sure, you might be pissed, but who cares? The Cure have milked their audience dry. I was suspect when I heard that they were putting out yet another compilation of old material.

Putting the history of The Cure on one disc is doing a disservice to the band and more importantly to their fans. Why not put out a box set? Oh, I bet that’s next year. They have so many great b-sides that are nowhere to be found here. And if this is a greatest hits, why are there songs from Wild Mood Swings here? They left of “Fascination Street” but put on “Wrong Number,” a song from their last singles compilation!?!

To try to make the set special, they recorded two new songs (nothing special) and included a whole disc of acoustic takes of the songs from the first disc. Good idea, if it would have been any good. It sounds like fat Bob and the band got dragged out of bed down to the studio with a gun to their head to record this set. It sounds like they recorded all of the songs on the same day in one take. Lackluster to say the least.
