Bright Eyes (Conor Oberst, Mike Mogis, and Nathaniel Wolcott) have announced the third wave of their companion EP releases that tie into previous albums: Cassadaga: A Companion, The People’s Key: A Companion, and Noise Floor (Rarities 1998-2005): A Companion. They have also shared three tracks, one from each EP: “Middleman (Companion Version)” (from Cassadaga), “When You Were Mine” (from The People’s Key), and “Blue Angels Air Show (Companion Version)” (from Noise Floor). This weekend was the finale of the entirely virtual Newport Folk Festival, aptly dubbed “Our Voices Together,” as it features upward of 20 artists covering Burt Bacharach’s classic “What the World Needs Now Is Love.” The cover was led by Jim James of My Morning Jacket and music directed by Chris Funk of The Decemberists, wrapping up the week-long virtual fest. Music festivals are long gone, for now. And although we’re sad to miss out on overpriced beer and potential heat stroke, that isn’t stopping organizers from doing a virtual version of the events. This past weekend was the legendary Newport Folk Festival, and slotted for those events were contemporary singer/songwriter starlets Phoebe Bridgers and Courtney Barnett. Father John Misty (aka Josh Tillman) released a new album, God’s Favorite Customer, back in June via Sub Pop worldwide (except for Europe, where it’s on Bella Union). Now he has done a session for Spotify where he covers Gillian Welch’s “Everything Is Free” and performs a new synth-pop version of “Mr. Tillman.” More
