It was shaping up to be a weak week for Songs of the Week, but then our #1 track emerged today and we dug a little deeper through the week’s songs and put together a compelling Top 10. It’s an eclectic mix of political songs, catchy mainstream pop, a strange sci-fi spoken word track, and some unapologetic guitar indie rock. More

Album of the Week: Young Fathers

Cocoa Sugar Out Now via Ninja Tune

Mar 09, 2018

For this week’s album of the week, we could begin in a tired tirade on how we should forefront any dialogue on resistance, and especially from people of color. Jan 19, 2018

2018 is coming on strong with lots of fantastic new tracks this week in our second Songs of the Week post of the year. Like last week, it was definitely a challenge to narrow it down to only 10. Young Fathers do not tend to mention politics explicitly on Cocoa Sugar but the weight of three years of political turmoil since their last album looms large over this new record. Like Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN., it captures the anger and frustration of the current moment without directly addressing the cause. Instead, it lets its ingenious mix of soul, Krautrock, and hip-hop speak for itself. More
