Dungen Tour Diary Part 1

The Swedish psych-rock band Dungen is currently touring the US of A. The tour started with some dates with Fleet Foxes. Dungen will be providing text and photo updates exclusively for Under the Radar's readers along the way. Here is part one of Dungen's tour diary. Visit the band's website for details of the rest of their tour dates

Dungen "sort of rock-group" leaves Swedish soil on the 2nd of August. Yes, there is an enormous buzz, even though it's not very much present in this actual photo of Johan as he waits for check-in with all the instruments into the special luggage section. We've actually done this before, but this time around it all feels a bit different; we're about to meet up with Fleet Foxes in Montréal. It's going to be a long journey via Philadelphia. Different moods and feelings are about to collide among the four of us, and it will all be put inside a giant body of metal that is supposed to make us lift off the ground and fly us over an enormously massive big body of water, then put us down into a totally different but still amazing continent.

Arriving in Philadelphia we are supposed to check out our luggage and carry it through security yet another time to make the connection for Montréal, the only problem is that the flight that we're just about to miss out is canceled. The reason, we're told, is that there had been a big thunderstorm right before we arrived.

Connecting with our amazing tour-manager, Chris Newmyer—already in Montréal waiting for us—we finally get a hotel for the night. Right before that we are told that the only flight for Montréal the following afternoon is full. Chris then tells us that only Reine and Gustav can arrive to Montréal in time for the first show with Fleet Foxes and then maybe do it as duo-set which all seems crazy but in a strange way tempting; a couple of hours later we're told that Chris has actually managed to fix four tickets for all of us. Sometime during the night we went to a bar right across from the hotel, to think OR NOT to think about all of this.

Dungen is Amazing!  Saw two shows on their last U.S. tour and got blown away both times.  For one thing, their live mix sounds great and they just play some really kick-ass tunes.  I wish they were coming to Colorado!  Last October I drove like 11 hours to see them and it was WELL worth it!

Just saw Dungen in Baltimore at the Ottobar and they were AMAZING! I’d been waiting years for them to come back over here and it was well worth the wait. Drove 6 hours to go see them. They’re amazing live, go see them if you can! Also, got to talk the guys after the show and they are all very humble and incredibly nice. What a charming, talented group of lads!

Dungen just finished rocking Austin, Texas about 5 hours ago leaving everyone more than satisfied. I cannot commend this band enough for the sheer talent and, as another poster said, good ole humility; each of them thanked Austin several times throughout the set and treated all the eager fans with an open ear. If you’re already reading this blog, then you probably are seeing them very soon or have already this tour. If you’re seeing them soon buy these guys a beer or pick up some of their merchandise - some of which is only available this tour.

Saw Dungen in Austin yesterday and ‘twas amazing. I was right in front and got many a hand slap from Gustav. What humble men these guys were. This is what music needs more of. They were all so gentle and nice, as these other posters have said. My friends and I talked to the drummer for a little bit afterwards, and he was the coolest. It further proved that this is a completely down to earth band. It is definitely worth seeing this band. Dungen live is an incredible experience. No rock-star bull-shit. Loved it.

Saw Dungen at Austin’s Mowhawk this past friday. The show was awesome, it just had such a great vibe. Guys you are awesome, Gustav it was really nice getting to talk to you. You guys are truly very creative musicians. Sorry we weren’t able to make it to the “after bash”; we had a car problem sadly, but greetings from Mexico it was totally worth it (:

The ten tracks on 4 comprise Dungen’s most concentrated effort to date, beats surging forth and atmosphere changing as their sound continues to evolve.
