Galway Film Fleadh: Day Three
Song of the Sea, President
The 27th annual Galway Film Fleadh is well underway, and that means the festival has settled from the initial anticipation, and a smooth order has taken over. The big event for the night was the Irish premiere of the animated film Song of the Sea, a beautiful story from the same studio that produced Secret of Kells. The film is a remarkable work of animation, and the atmosphere felt like a warm homecoming for the cast and crew.
The screening was sold out, but a ticket freed up just before it started. I took my seat, and the man next to me joked, “Ha, I guess you’re my date for the night.” I bantered back, while he explained that one of his guests backed out, so I thanked him for the ticket. I was about to ask him whether he was involved in the film, but my inner-introvert took over and I merely waited for the film to begin. Afterward, the man stood up and joined the cast onstage. Turns out it was Pat Shortt, a very well-known Irish comedian, who nonetheless is probably unknown to most of the States (I now realize I’ve seen him in countless episodes of Father Ted, as the local man, Tom, usually wearing a t-shirt saying “I shot JR”). When I tell Irish friends who I sat next to during the film, they give looks of amazement, and proceed to tell me how iconic and important he is to Irish comedy.
Following the screening, the Irish music act Kila, who helped score the film, performed a free gig for all who attended the film. Music is an integral part of the story, which draws on Celtic mythology and utilizes traditional Irish music in its storytelling.
Wrapping up the night, I saw President from Iranian filmmaker Mohsen Makhmalbaf. So far, President might be the highlight of the Fleadh. It was a standout feature, and kept the audience talking about it well into the night.
Today was relatively brief, but still impactful. Tomorrow I start early again, with lots more to look forward to.

The screening was sold out, yet a ticket arranged for just before it began. I sat down, and the man beside me clowned, “Ha, I figure you’re my date for the night.” I exchanged words back, while he clarified that one of his visitors pulled out, so I said thanks to him for the ticket. I was going to ask him whether he was associated with the film, yet my inward self-observer assumed control and I simply sat tight for the film to start.
