Green Man Festival 2014 Preview
From The War on Drugs and Mac DeMarco to Neutral Milk Hotel and Mercury Rev - All the Band's You Need to See at This Weekend's Festival in Wales
Aug 14, 2014 Green Man Festival 2014
Today Under the Radar will be braving all that the British summertime has to throw at us and heading down to the Glanusk Park Estate-nestled at the heart of a natural amphitheatre in Wales’ stunning Black Mountains-for The Green Man Festival 2014.
We’ll be front and center for four days (August 14th - 17th) of incredible live music and with past acts ranging from Local Natives, Fleet Foxes, and Animal Collective to The Flaming Lips and Van Morrison, we’re rather excited about what they have in store for us this year. Although it’s not all about the music; there are a with a wide range of activities all running in tandem from workshops and guest speakers to cult films, a beer and cider festival, stand-up comedians and DJs playing late into the night.
And there’s a beer and cider festival…did we mention that?
Now in it’s twelfth year, Green Man has built a strong case for being one of the U.K.‘s coolest and friendliest small festivals-so join us as we pull on our stiff walking boots, unpack our tent, and in no particular order pick just a tiny handful of the many amazing acts 2014 has to offer.
Thursday
The WaterBoys: Although the festival doesn’t officially reach it’s higher gears until the Friday, it would be remiss if you missed this legendary band of Irish troubadours. Now all together: “Too high, Too far, Too soon…”
Friday
Four of the best…
Mac DeMarco: The clown prince of jaunty indie rock finally came of age this year with the best album of his career. And while his live shows-renowned for a wild and wicked atmosphere-have reportedly calmed down, the young Canadian’s set will still be unmissable.
Caribou: It’s been four long years since Swim and with a new album out in October this is going to be a taster of what we can expect from the eclectic mind of musical polymath Daniel Victor Snaith.
Flo Morissey: 19-year-old British folk newcomer with crystalline vocals that slowly sweep you away with their majesty.
Beirut: Zac Condon and Co. return with a set that promises to span their surprisingly short, yet extraordinarily accomplished career.
And three more you need to see…

Four of the best…
The War on Drugs: Adam Granduciel has produced one of the finest albums from this-or any other year-and live his band are an unassailable experience. An absolute must see.
Ought: Jittery post punk from the non-Canadian-but-nevertheless-Montreal-based group. Whose debut album is a sharp rush of joy that stands out-even in a year packed with great records.
Slint: It seems that for now at least this beloved Kentucky band have made a permanent return and-emboldened on by Lance Bangs fantastic documentary about their career Breadcrumb Trails-they sound better than ever.
Mercury Rev: It’s been a long time since the release of their opus Deserter Songs but it’s going to be a treat for all those Mercury Rev fans when they perform it in full on the main stage at Green Man.
And three more you need to see…

Sunday
Four of the best…
Samaris: Icelandic wunderkinds who are bringing new meaning to the term “glacial” with their stunning debut. Their unique mix of electronica, clarinet, and Jófríður Ákadóttir’s unmistakable vocals creating something truly magical.
Joanna Gruesome: Welsh noiseniks whose visceral sound and onstage ferocity will resonate through the mountainous surroundings.
Kurt Vile and the Violators: Philly native and close ally to ex-bandmates The War on Drugs, Vile has steadily honed his craft with each album. And his latest-2013’s Walkin on a Pretty Daze-marks the high watermark in an already storied career.
Neutral Milk Hotel: Needing little introduction, Jeff Magnum and the band will be closing out the festival with the bittersweet strains of the lo-fi genius that has defined their career and made them indie icons.
And three more you need to see…
