There are a couple ways one can review a concert. One can take the analytical approach: lurk at the back or side of the venue, notebook in hand, watching, waiting, taking notes, analyzing the proceedings. Or one can take the immersive route: push to the front, rub elbows with the masses, eschew the notebook for a beer, and dance like tomorrow will never come.
When Megadeth played Sands Bethlehem Event Center in Bethlehem, PA on this brisk mid-March Saturday, the tactic for review was clearly the latter. There could be no sitting back. No punctilious notes. This was metal, total immersion, the whole experience.
To start, it should be noted that Dystopia, Megadeth’s recently released 15th (!) album, solidified by the core of original members guitarist/vocalist Dave Mustaine and bassist David Ellefson and augmented by new guitar virtuoso Kiko Loureiro and drummer Chris Adler, is a spectacular addition to the band’s catalog. A return to form after the somewhat disappointing Super Collider from 2013, Dystopia is a speed-metal masterpiece anchored by Mustaine’s increasingly growly vocals and Loureiro’s pristine and über-heavy guitar mastery.
Of the four acts on the bill, the first opener, Denver thrashers Havok, was missed due to a particularly slow line outside the venue. Arriving at the very un-metal time of 6:45 PM, this intrepid reviewer waited in line until 8:00 PM before finally being ushered in to the venue, only after being instructed to empty his pockets and be sure to leave all weapons and professional cameras in the car. Havok had already finished, and the second opener, Finland’s Children of Bodom, were already rocking. With its keyboard-augmented metal, Children of Bodom sufficiently held the audience rapt before the two bands that most of the crowd seemed there to see.
Suicidal Tendencies followed, with energy unmatched. Running the stage back and forth, waving his arms up and down, singer Mike Muir cut the quite imposing figure, spouting his positive lyrics and urging the crowd in numerous chants. Worth noting, and astutely pointed out by more than a couple metal enthusiasts in attendance, former Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo was anchoring the kit for ST on this night. At one point, Muir took a vote of who had seen Suicidal Tendencies before and who had not. Suffice it to say that the uninitiated overwhelmingly supported the notion of seeing the band again, when Muir said it will be headlining in the fall.
And on to Megadeth. It was clear from the go that the power of this band is unrivaled after more than 30 years in the hard rock game. Mustaine commands the stage with a vocal and guitar presence like few others. Packed like sardines from start to finish, concertgoers could only hope to eke out the smallest space to head bang to the music, even so risking bashing one’s skull into the shoulder of the person in front. Much of the crowd was a motely crew of middle-aged men in Megadeth t-shirts, but most were exceedingly friendly. Despite the image of speed metal fans being loners, a certain camaraderie was present in spades (notwithstanding the gentleman who propositioned this reviewer and a new pal for fun later in the evening, before mercifully needing to retire to the restroom mid-set).
Megadeth’s set was a healthy 90-minute combination of old and new classics. The cuts from Dystopia, particularly the album’s opening couple “The Threat is Real” and “Dystopia,” melded terrifically with the older material. The riffs were abundant. Bass solos from the virtuosic Ellefson integrated seamlessly into the set, providing chance for a bit of shake and groove to augment one’s thrash. Megadeth mascot Vic Rattlehead came out at one point, nearly missed by this reviewer who chose that particular instant to acknowledge the probable necessity of at least jotting down an idea or two. Thankfully, a new friend pointed out the spectacular sight taking place literally 20 feet from his face.
By the show’s end, a ten year old, on his kind brother’s shoulders, was giving devil horns and singing all the words to “Peace Sells.” The crowd was whipped into a further frenzy by the closer “Holy Wars…The Punishment Due.” And by the end, most everyone seemed exhausted from jumping, slam dancing, grooving, grinding, and head banging.
At the end of the show, after Mustaine, to the envy of all in attendance, borrowed a fan’s camera to take a selfie, he gave the good old goodbye: “You’ve been great. We’ve been Megadeth.” On this night, a night of perfect metal mastery, they sure were. And the crowd left exhausted and exuberant, excited and ecstatic, newfound friends in metal, every one of us.
