(Under the Radar's Spring 2011 Issue is a special Music vs. Comedy issue that features musicians and comedians in conversation with each other and generally examines the intersection between indie music and comedy. We're also posting web-exclusive essays that were not printed in the issue, including this one by Sonny and the Sunsets' Sonny Smith.)

The music biz is the funniest thing in town. It's a funny farm! High comedy. First there's these turkeys up on stage with big heads flaunting their special feathers. Then these chicks, looking around for the stud with the biggest antlers, they've usually got some poor whipped dog on a leash they've dragged to the club. There's these weasels lurking around too, I mean real snakes, trying to get something over on somebody, anybody, and there's some rat somewhere who's supposed to pay you and can't be found. Some crow hands you pills and you start quacking like a duck, you go blind as a bat, but somehow you see a neon unicorn. The cool cats doing the door at the club throw you out, and a few drunk jackasses badger you on the sidewalk. And in some cubicle somewhere there's a bunch of pigs sitting around tearing everything down.

If you're really lucky, especially lucky, you'll meet this fox, a real classy bird, she won't have anything to do with this monkey business, she's too smart, so you ask her to marry you about five times, but she doesn't want anything to do with you because you're a jackass. You tell her you're a stallion but she knows you're a lame duck. And yet... finally she relents, because she's a little cuckoo too, and this is your swan song, when the both of you move out to the country and raise some pups.

(Sonny and the Sunsets' latest album album, Hit After Hit, was released by Fat Possum back in April.)
