One Little Indie: Blanche As A Name

Nov 21, 2012 Web Exclusive By Frank Valish Bookmark and Share

Bleeding Gold Records’ new 7” single from French duo Blanche As A Name is beautifully brooding, dark pop music in the vein of Depeche Mode but with a distinctly sweeter undertone. Both songs on the record, “Frost” and “Like A Lake,” are taken from the band’s digital EP, Ravens. The former finds the band crooning, “I wanna freeze to death” not unlike one would expect Morrissey to sing such a line, while the latter exudes instrumental minimalist pleasures with male and female vocals intertwining in minor-key melancholy. A third download-only track, “Crossing the Sign,” which is unique to this release, breaks the depressed cycle somewhat in a chiming guitar-driven slice of male/female vocal-drenched pop, wherin the duo drops its affectations and harmonizes to wonderful effect.

There is not much out there to be found about Blanche As A Name, biographically-speaking. While they sing in English, any press information available is in French, and even with the wonders of Google Translate, the duo’s names still remain a mystery (hence the incorrect pronoun usage above). But if the tunes on this single are any indication, you’ll be sure to know their names soon enough. (blancheasaname.bandcamp.com/)

The name’s popularity might be related to aesthetic concepts current at the time, whereby “a skin white as milk” was considered as an ultimate mark of female beauty. Such idealised depictions of beautiful women - of beautiful princesses in particular - are attested in in numerous works of prose and poetry of this period. -954-691-1102

From a medieval French nickname meaning “white, fair”. This name and its cognates in other languages are ultimately derived from the Germanic word blanc.
