One Little Indie: R. Ring
Dec 21, 2012 Web Exclusive
R. Ring is the new project of Kelley Deal (The Breeders) and Mike Montgomery (Ampline). After releasing three limited-quantity homemade singles, "Fallout & Fire" b/w "See" is the duo's first official 7" release, out on Misra Records. And one should not wait on R. Ring. Despite its members acknowledging the wait-and-see dynamic to the project, R. Ring seems to pick up steam with each successive small release. The A-side of this single is a minimalist acoustic guitar-led track with Deal singing in a slow, measured tone with that distinctive tone and timbre for which she's made a name for herself. The flip side starts with Deal asking for the lights to be turned down before romping into just under two minutes of up-tempo electric guitar-driven rave, featuring vocals by both Deal and Montgomery as perfect foils for one another. As a pair, the two tracks represent distinct sides of R. Ring, both superbly played and terrifically engaging. Cheekily, the record's cover features a cartoon orange and banana, sitting on the floor in suggestive poses, seemingly about to consummate their bizarre inter-fruit marriage. Like anything so good, the music here is over too soon, and now we are relegated to waiting for more music from this pair. But what a remarkable start. (rringband.com)
