Reissued and Revisited: Bobby Patterson

It’s Just a Matter of Time [Real Gone Music]

In his five plus decades in the music business, Texas soul man Bobby Patterson has been many things, from songwriter to producer of artists such as Fontella Bass and Little Johnny Taylor to radio DJ. As recently as 2014, he released his last album, entitled I Got More Soul!, 42 years after his debut, 1972’s It’s Just a Matter of Time.

Reissued on beautiful dark purple vinyl from Real Gone Music, It’s Just a Matter of Time remains a classic to this day. From the gentle “I Get My Groove From You” to the funky and horn-filled “Make Sure You Can Handle It,” to the swinging “Everything Good To You (Don’t Have To Be Good For You),” It’s Just a Matter of Time hits all the right musical notes. Lyrically, the album is a bit more one note, filled with songs of mostly loving and cheating, a bit of gold digging, and men being generally self-centered. The more indie-rock inclined will note that Golden Smog covered “She Don’t Have To See You (To See Through You)” on its 1995 album Down By the Old Mainstream.

The album ends with a guitar-led, politically-themed raver, “This Whole Funky World Is a Ghetto,” that strays from the lyrical focus of the rest of the album. But it’s definitely a high note on which Patterson ends—with a danceable stomp. Real Gone Music has done an important service, getting It’s Just a Matter of Time back into circulation, for all of us to appreciate (or re-appreciate) a lesser known soul classic.
