Reissued and Revisited: The Turtles
The Turtles 45 RPM Vinyl Singles Collection (FloEdCo/Manifesto)
The Turtles was an interesting ‘60s phenomenon. Riding the folk-pop wave of the late half of the decade, the band managed to chart a few singles, including the infamous “Happy Together,” which hit #1 and “She’d Rather Be With Me,” which made it to #3. Other songs charted but none neared this level of success. By 1970 The Turtles had broken up. This collection of eight 7” records reminds of The Turtles’ history and cements its legacy as a forgotten group who, despite several charting hits, never got its full artistic due.
The A-Sides of these records are the same as those released in the mid- to late-‘60s: its cover of Dylan’s “It Ain’t Me Babe,” “Let Me Be,” “You Baby,” “Happy Together,” and “She’d Rather Be With Me,” among others. The B-Sides, however, are not the same songs that were initially released with their A-Side counterparts. For the flip-sides, this collection cherry-picks songs from The Turtles’ catalog that may have been lesser know or under-recognized. The Harry Nilsson-written “Story of Rock and Roll” graces the flip of “She’d Rather Be With Me.” The excellently jangly Warren Zevon-written “Outside Chance,” a single in its own right, albeit one that didn’t chart at the time it was released in 1966, is the B-Side to 1968’s “Eleanor.” “You Don’t Have to Walk in the Rain,” a song written by The Turtles themselves and released to little fanfare in 1969 is the B-Side to the band’s first and only chart topper, 1965’s Dylan cover.
Call it revisionist history, and perhaps to a degree it is. But the tracks presented as they are here are not mismatched by any means. The collection flows. And more than revising history, The Turtles 45 RPM Vinyl Singles Collection highlights the missed gems in its catalog. (www.theturtles.com)
