Why I’m Voting for Biden: Inara George of The Bird and the Bee

“Four more years of [climate change] denial might be the difference between survival and annihilation.”

With next Tuesday’s election day looming and millions of Americans already voting early, we put the word out to see if any musicians wanted to write about why they were voting for Former Vice President Joe Biden over President Donald Trump in a series we are simply calling Why I’m Voting for Biden. Inara George, who is one half of The Bird and the Bee with Greg Kurstin, but has also released various solo albums, wrote this entry.

For those on the left, and the vast majority of the indie rock musicians we tend to cover are left leaning, this is very crucial election, especially as it’s one in the middle of a pandemic that has threatened their very livelihood, with touring put on hold until a vaccine is found and independent venues across America facing possible extinction.

The Bird and the Bee just put out a new holiday album, Put Up the Lights, on Release Me. That follows their 2019 covers album, Interpreting the Masters Volume 2: A Tribute to Van Halen. George’s last solo album was 2018’s Dearest Everybody.

Visit vote.org or headcount.org to register to vote, get information on your polling place or on mail in voting, and to find out what else might be on your ballot.

I’m voting for Joe Biden because I believe in compassion. Because I believe in science. Because I believe that healthcare is a right. Because I believe that wearing a mask is science, healthcare, and compassion all working together. Because I believe that this country needs to heal from wounds past and present and that Joe Biden is the only candidate running for president who has the emotional and spiritual capacity to recognize that. Because I believe that the spaces between us do not divide us, but are bridges of billions and trillions and zillions of molecules. And that everything we do and say and feel affects the world and the people and the animals and air and earth and water around us. And so, I believe we have the grave responsibility to protect this planet and all the people on it from our own shortsighted and reckless behavior. Because I believe that climate change is real and fast approaching. Because I believe that every year, every month, every week, hour, minute, and second counts in this existential crisis. And that four more years of denial might be the difference between survival and annihilation. It’s so hard to believe that’s the reality for me, my children, and my children’s children. But it is. And it’s real. And we have to do something about it. Please vote. Please show the future generations of the world that we were thinking of them. Please show them that we care enough to cast our vote for someone who understands the gravity of this moment.
