CSS on Meeting Paris Hilton at Coachella

Cansei de Ser Sexy, the debut album from Brazil’s CSS, which was released last year by Sub Pop and was Under the Radar’s second best debut album of 2006, featured the song “Meeting Paris Hilton.” The band hadn’t actually met the celebrity socialite and hotel heiress when they wrote the song. But last weekend fate intervened when CSS played the Coachella festival out in the California desert. Among the celebrities who made the three-hour trek from Los Angeles—including Lindsay Lohan, Jessica Alba, Danny DeVito, and Cameron Diaz—was the one and only Paris Hilton. Paris was spotted dancing to Air’s “Sexy Boy” (a song she no doubt thinks is “hot”), but was also seen getting down to CSS on the side of the stage. “She was dancing next to the monitors table all the time, just next to the stage,” remembers CSS bassist Ira Trevisian.

Then backstage CSS finally got to actually meet Paris Hilton. Trevisian gave us the scoop on what that meeting was like. “It was funny. She was very sweat and very curious to see our show. She doesn’t talk too much but I could see she was having fun,” comments Trevisian. Trevisian adds that Paris had definitely heard “Meeting Paris Hilton” before. “She knew about the song for sure, Steve Aoki is our friend and he said that he usually DJ’s the song when she is in a party. And she receives a lot of our clippings because of her name being in our song.”

Trevisian says that the band also enjoyed watching several of their peers’ sets at Coachella— including sets by Grizzly Bear, Arcade Fire, Justice, Klaxons, and Jose Gonalez—and overall had a great time at this year’s festival. “It was our first big summer festival, and none of us had the chance to go as audience [to Coachella] before, but it was an important experience to us,” Trevisian says of the Coachella experience. “We loved that they decorated the trailer especially to all the bands, and our trailer had Beastie Boys posters all over it. We did some festivals before, but none this size. The best thing about festivals is meeting a lot of bands and people we like, and this one exceeded our expectations in this aspect.”

Now all CSS needs to do is meet Beyonce Knowles. After all, Cansei de Ser Sexy translates to “Tired of Being Sexy,” which was a quote from Beyonce.
