David & the Citizens: David & the Citizens (Friendly Fire)

David & The Citizens is big in Sweden. In its home country, the band has released two albums and a handful of EPs, along with regularly performing the European festival circuit and even scoring an MTV hit. The band’s first U.S. release works as something of a primer, compiling songs from throughout the band’s recorded history, as far back as its 2001 debut EP. To say we Yanks don’t know what we have been missing is an understatement, as the songs here rank with some of the best power pop of the last 10 years. For an American reference point, think Minus 5—just as playful but with greater intensity. From the jubilant horns beginning “Graycoated Morning” to the furious acoustic guitar of “Now She Sleeps in a Box In the Good Soil of Denmark,” and the driving bass and frenzied instrumental workout of “Big Chill,” there is nary a low point. Friendly Fire plans to re-release 2003’s Until the Sadness is Gone later this year. Petition them for the rest. (www.thecitizens.nu) 8 Blips out of 10 By Frank Valish
