 Einstürzende
Neubauten: Palast der
Republik DVD (MVD)
Big Audio Dynamite: E=MC2
DVD (MVD)
Redefining “for fans only”: This summer brings two new live
DVDs from two of the crappiest-named bands of the ’80s, Einstürzende
Neubauten and Big Audio Dynamite. Maybe these names sounded cool in the
’80s, but so apparently did Dexy’s Midnight Runners and Haysi
Fantayzee. Inexplicably, there was even a Big Audio Dynamite II! Did Mick
Jones (formerly of The Clash) need to let us know that he got rid of his
first group of BADsters and replaced them with three random new guys?
Would anyone have noticed? Anyway, there’s a live DVD, E=MC2
here, with a whopping nine songs recorded 17 years ago with a running
time of less than one hour and no extras. Sorry folks, that’s just
BAD. Einstürzende Neubauten (which might be German for “the
proto-industrial band that wasn’t named Can or Kraftwerk”)
at least brings it, with a live performance from this century. Palast
der Republik features a 100-member choir singing with E. Neubs amongst
building ruins in Berlin.
