To end out the week, we ask Tancred some questions about endings and death. Tancred is the project of Jess Abott. Last month the Maine musician released her fourth full-length album, Nightstand, via Polyvinyl. Lewis Pesacov (Best Coast, Generationals) produced Nightstand, which is the follow-up to 2016’s Out of the Garden. “I wanted the album to have a timeless feel to it, so you could hear my stories of love and loneliness and sense that these are themes that have existed for everyone forever,” said Abott of Nighstand in a press release announcing the album. “Ultimately, we are all feeling these things together, and that can be enough to feel less alone. There’s a hopefulness in the loneliness.”
Read on as Abott talks about her favorite ending to a movie, what songs she’d like played on her deathbed and at her funeral, when she’d like to die, as well as her personal versions of heaven and hell.
How would you like to die and what age would you like to be?
I want to be 69 years old and spend a whole evening drinking champagne with my closest friends and family and then die in my sleep unexpectedly that night.
What song would you like to be playing at your deathbed?
“Be Good or Be Gone” by Fionn Regan.
What song would you like to be performed at your funeral and who would you like to sing it?
“Ceremony” by New Order performed by all of my musical friends who are at the funeral.
What’s your favorite ending to a movie?
Letters to Cleo playing a Cheap Trick song on the school rooftop at the end of 10 Things I Hate About You. Legend.
What’s your favorite series (or season) finale episode of a TV show?
S2 of Buffy. When she catches the sword tip in between her bare hands before it hits her face.
What’s your favorite last song on an album?
“Stay” by Lisa Loeb.
What’s your favorite last album by a band who then broke up?
Retreat From the Sun by That Dog.
If you were on death row, what would you like your last meal to be?
Steak tartare from The Butcher Shop in Boston.
What’s your concept of the afterlife?
Our energy dispersing back into the world and redistributing calmly into every corner. Sry bout it.
What would be your own personal version of heaven if it exists?
Endless free time to entertain every interest and hobby. Sleeping without worrying about alarms or time of day. Existing outside of capitalism for five seconds. French fries are actually really healthy and nutritious for you.
What would be the worst punishment the devil could devise for you in hell, if he exists?
You have to go on a really slow desktop computer and read everyone’s political opinions on Twitter for all eternity.
What role or achievement would you most like to be remembered for?
Not giving a shit.
What would you like your last words to be?
Has anyone seen my dongle?
