Bluebottle Kiss: Revenge Is Slow
(In Music We Trust)

The Australian/New Zealand part of world isn’t all headbangers and hard rockers. Sounding nothing like The Vines or The Datsuns, Revenge Is Slow is the first US release for Sydney-based Bluebottle Kiss. The album starts off well with “Father’s Hands,” a charming, Wilco-esque song about the way things were and the way things could be. “Hasten the Blows” is another great track -- the best on the album. It has a melodically repetitive guitar riff the likes of which Coldplay has been using to climb the charts. But four songs in and things start to become a bit dreary. The sweet compositions turn melancholy, and the effect starts to lull you to sleep. As if realizing this fact, the five-minute mark of the dragging “Prussian Blue” tries to jolt listeners awake with an out-of-place screaming of the lyrics. Revenge Is Slow has some beautiful moments early on, but the sustained dreariness of the remainder of songs isn’t for everybody.
