Judging
by the liner notes, printed in both English and Japanese,
Jeff Larson must have a following in the Land of the Rising
Sun. Suffice it to say, Larson’s sound bears no resemblance
to The Boredoms, Shonen Knife, Puffi Ami Yumi or Pizzicatto
Five. Instead, he prefers to mine a light “California-rock” vein
previously worked over by the likes of The Eagles, Poco,
Ambrosia, The Eagles, Pablo Cruise, The Eagles and, well,
The Eagles.
So it’s only fitting that Larson should feature an actual Eagle, guitarist
Timothy B. Schmit, in his group alongside two members of America, Dewy Bunnell
and Gerry Beckley. As can be expected by the participants, the results are typically
laid-back, mid-tempo country rock, with Larson’s vocals doing a fair approximation
of Don Henley and Glen Frey.
In a sidebar, a bonus version of the album’s “Norman” contains
a fascinating producer’s running commentary on the song’s instrumentation.
In addition, the disc offers an instrumental version of the folky “Heavy
Rain.” Not really to my taste at all, but pleasant enough.
