Basking
in a sea of landscapes and travels, Eamonn Vitt has journeyed
far and wide since his spell in the Boston band Karate. He
left the band in ‘97 to pursue a career in medicine
at Columbia University, but thankfully his musical prowess
didn’t desert him. It was only enhanced by a sense
of nurturing. He combined his studies with long and scenic
travels to countries like Chile, Argentina, England and Vietnam,
and Deserted Music explores the mishaps, relationships and
experiences that evolved and progressed along the way. This
solo debut was produced by Adam Lasus (of Yo La Tengo, Helium
and Mark Mulcahy fame), and Vitt warbles his way through
numerous tales with melodic gusto, over syncopated drums
and tepid guitars and tambourines. It is an arresting collection
of tunes depicting hazy thoughts whilst traveling and contemplating. “Left
At Gallop” starts with an Oasis-like conviction with
pints of lager in hand. Yet when the mayhem should really
kick in, we are left with a very lukewarm comparison.
Vitt shines at the lamenting, summer songs… and good
for him. I had a personal affiliation with “Mixed Drinks” -- “keep
mixing drinks, it’s all the same.…” If
only life were that simple. Or maybe it is? There is a beautiful
air of nomadic grace and melody in this album, but it never
really kicks. But when travelling, when does one need to?
