Issue #33 - Fall 2010 - Interpol

Oct 11, 2010

Interpol graces the cover of Under the Radar‘s Fall 2010 Issue and the issue features an in-depth 10-page article on the band. Under the Radar staff writer Matt Fink conducted extensive interviews with each member and Under the Radar co-Publisher/head photographer Wendy Lynch Redfern conducted an exclusive photo-shoot with the trio in Los Angeles.

“Literally every artist in the world, even if they’re selling millions and millions of records, if they get a little bit of shit in the press, it does bother you.” - Interpol’s Paul Banks

In our main features section, Deerhunter‘s Bradford Cox and Stereolab‘s Laetitia Sadier interview each other about their friendship and mutual admiration for each other’s music. Mark Ronson talks about his new album Record Collection, and we also talk to Rose Elinor Dougall, who appears on the album. Simon Helberg, who plays Howard Wolowitz on the hit TV series The Big Bang Theory, reveals his tough side and is photographed in a boxing ring fighting himself.

“Not to sound obsessive, but when that album came out, I was a senior in high school, and my parents were getting a divorce, I had my first boyfriend, and we drove around in his car listening to that album every night.” - Deerhunter’s Bradford Cox on Stereolab’s Cobra and Phases Group Play Voltage in the Milky Night

Our Detection section includes interviews with Blonde Redhead, Jenny and Johnny, Grinderman, Antony and the Johnsons, The Walkmen, and The Corin Tucker Band, as well as self-portrait by Animal Collective‘s Avey Tare. Philip Seymour Hoffman talks about directorial debut Jack Goes Boating-including his use of Grizzly Bear and Fleet Foxes on the soundtrack. Writer Robert Kirkman describes the process of adapting The Walking Dead from comic book to the TV screen, and writer/artist Jeff Lemire discusses his acclaimed Vertigo comic book Sweet Tooth. Writer Laura Studarus headed over to Poland to check out the OFF Festival, while Mark Redfern reported back from Comic-Con.

“There’s a quality to Fleet Foxes that is kind of operatic in its emotion. There are songs that they have that are really vast and full and colorful and exhilarating in their emotions.” - Philip Seymour Hoffman

The Pleased to Meet You section features interviews with these exciting new artists: Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr., Glasser, Lord Huron, Motorifik, Nightlands, The Red River, Sun Airway, and Twin Shadow.

“We live in such an era where there’s so much amazing shit going on, but the pile of trash is growing so much faster than the pile of good stuff, and a sin you can make is to add to the pile of bad stuff.” - Twin Shadow’s George Lewis Jr.

Over 150 CDs, DVDs, books, comic books, films, TV shows, video games, and comic books are reviewed in the issue, including reviews of releases by The 1900s, Aloe Blacc, Antony and the Johnsons, Ólöf Arnalds, The Autumn Defense, Avey Tare, Badly Drawn Boy, Bobby Bare Jr., Bear in Heaven, The Black Angels, Black Milk, Blonde Redhead, David Bowie, The Charlatans, The Church, A Classic Education, The Clientele, Clinic, Cloud Nothings, The Concretes, The Corin Tucker Band, Crocodiles, Dark Dark Dark, Deerhunter, Destroyer, Dolorean, Rose Elinor Dougall, Dungen, Justin Townes Earle, Eels, El Guincho, Brian Eno, Eternal Summers, The Extra Lens, Bryan Ferry, Flying Lotus, Ben Folds/Nick Hornby, Friendly Fires, Fucked Up, Future Islands, The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger, Glasser, Chilly Gonzales, Gram Rabbit, Grateful Dead, Half-handed Cloud, Fran Healy, Idlewild, Interpol, James, Tim Kasher, Lissie, Lyrics Born, Margot & the Nuclear So and So’s, Maximum Balloon, Megafaun, No Age, Old 97’s, Orange Juice, Owen Pallett, Pepper Rabbit, Perfume Genius, The Phantom Band, Robert Plant, Sam Prekop, Psychedelic Aliens, Queensryche, The Red River, Revolver, Mark Ronson and the Business Intl., Frankie Rose & the Outs, Laetitia Sadler, The Salteens, Seeland, Shit Robot, Sisters, Small Black, Elliott Smith, Sonny & the Sunsets, Mavis Staples, Stereolab, Marnie Stern, Sufjan Stevens, Kelley Stoltz, Sun Airway, Suuns, Tamaryn, James Taylor, Telekinesis, Tired Pony, Tricky, Tu Fawning, Twin Shadow, Sharon Van Etten, Abe Vigoda, Wild Nothing, Wolf People, Woman, Working For a Nuclear Free City and more.
