Issue #31
Issue #31 - Spring 2010 - Joanna Newsom
May 05, 2010
Joanna Newsom graces the cover, and the issue features an in-depth 10-page article on the singer/songwriter/harpist. Under the Radar staff writer Chris Tinkham conducted an extensive interview with Newsom, and longtime Under the Radar photographer collective Crackerfarm conducted an exclusive photo shoot with her in New York City.
“I think I’m a weird compensator for shyness, because in certain circumstances I don’t think I’m perceived as shy, but in others, it’s very, very clear.” - Joanna Newsom
For our four-page retrospective article on ‘90s legends Pavement and their reunion tour we interviewed four of the band’s five members and we commissioned artist Steve Keene, who drew the cover art for Pavement’s 1995 album Wowee Zowee, to create a new illustration of the iconic band to accompany our article. Other main features in the issue include Broken Social Scene, Sharon Jones (who talks about the lessons she’s learned in life), MGMT, The National, and The New Pornographers (whose Carl Newman we photographed at his house in Woodstock, NY).
“We influenced Weezer, so that’s a knock against us.” - Pavement’s Scott “Spiral Stairs” Kannberg
Our Detection section includes interviews with Caribou, Club 8, Plants and Animals, and The Radio Dept.; as well as a Self-Portrait from Jamie Lidell.
“We were playing that song, and it just got the name ‘Tom Cruz’ out of just the kind of vibe we were going on. We had a Tom Cruise confidence coming off of us. Those drinks or something got us all Tom Cruise-d up.” - Plants and Animals’ Warren C. Spicer
The Pleased to Meet You section features interviews with these exciting new artists: Cults, Delorean, Gayngs, jj, The Love Language, Tanlines, and Viernes.
“If I won’t be able to make music that I can get that feeling I don’t have a reason to live.” - jj’s Joakim Benon
Over 140 CDs, DVDs, books, comic books, films, TV shows, video games, and comic books are reviewed in the issue, including reviews of releases by The Apples in Stereo, Band of Horses, The Bird and the Bee, Black Francis, The Black Keys, Blitzen Trapper, Bonnie “Prince” Billy, Bright Eyes/Neva Dinova, Broken Bells, Broken Social Scene, David Byrne and Fatboy Slim, Caribou, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Cornershop, The Dead Weather, Deer Tick, Destroyer, Dosh, Doves, Dr. Dog, Karen Elson, Roky Erickson with Okkervil River, Flying Lotus, Fol Chen, Sage Francis, Frog Eyes, Future Islands, Gogol Bordello, Gorillaz, Here We Go Magic, The Hold Steady, Iggy & The Stooges, Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, The Joy Formidable, Damien Jurado, Kaki King, LCD Soundsystem, Light Pollution, The Magnetic Fields, Laura Marling, Steve Mason, Tift Merritt, MGMT, The Mynabirds, The National, The New Pornographers, Nice Nice, Phosphorescent, Emma Pollock, Rafter, The Sadies, Slow Club, Small Black, Stars, Suckers, Sweet Apple, The Tallest Man on Earth, Tanlines, Teenage Fanclub, Titus Andronicus, Tobacco, Trans Am, Two Door Cinema Club, UNKLE, Mark Van Hoen, Venice is Sinking, Viernes, Rufus Wainwright, The Wave Pictures, We Have Band, Paul Weller, The Whigs, The White Stripes, and many more.
