Issue #38 - 10th Anniversary Issue

Oct 20, 2011

Under the Radar is excited to announce the release of the indie music and entertainment print magazine’s 10th Anniversary Issue which is on newsstands now. The extra-sized 10th Anniversary Issue features cover artists Joanna Newsom and Fleet FoxesRobin Pecknold together in an exclusive photo shoot and joint interview. Exclusive video taken during the cover shoot of Robin Pecknold and Joanna Newsom arm wrestling can be found here.

The Anniversary Issue also features new interviews with many of the artists Under the Radar has covered over the years, including new articles with the first six cover stars: Grandaddy, The Divine Comedy, The Flaming Lips, Elliott Smith, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, and Rilo Kiley. The jam-packed issue also has pages of previously unpublished photos of Air, Beck, Beirut, Cat Power, The Decemberists, Florence and the Machine, Metric’s Emily Haines, She & Him, Tegan and Sara, and Sufjan Stevens.

Actor/comedian Paul Rudd interviews one of his all-time favorite musicians, The Divine Comedy’s Neil Hannon, who appeared on Under the Radar’s second cover. The issue also includes a new article on Elliott Smith, who graced Under the Radar’s fourth cover for what ended up being the iconic singer/songwriter’s final interview and photo shoot before his tragic passing, for which his friends and collaborators were interviewed. The article includes previously unpublished photos from Smith’s last-ever photo session. James Cargill of Broadcast also talks about the passing of his bandmate and romantic partner, Trish Keenan, for the first time since her untimely death earlier this year. Also interviewed: Bat For Lashes, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Broken Social Scene, Camera Obscura, Elbow, Electrelane, The Flaming Lips, Grandaddy, Ladytron, Local Natives, Mercury Rev, Mew, The New Pornographers, Rilo Kiley, Stereolab, Super Furry Animals, and Tegan and Sara.

Former regular Under The Radar contributor Chris Walla (Death Cab For Cutie) returns with a brand new “Chris Walla Explains It All” column to explore the disconnectedness of the modern social media-driven world. Writer Matt Fink asks whether or not bands can remain creatively viable beyond a 10-year period in feature article “The 10-Year Ache: Breaking the Law of Diminishing Returns.”

The not-to-be-missed digital/iPad version of the issue will also include exclusive bonus articles on: Arab Strap, Clinic, The Dears, The Delgados, DNTEL/The Postal Service, The Fiery Furnaces, Mogwai, of Montreal, Okkervil River, Saint Etienne, and Sonic Youth.

Selected quotes from the issue:

“[Robin Pecknold] sings like a sword swallower. Like someone who’s the combination of strength and ease, and deadly sharpness, just this incredible timbre. It freezes the whole room.” – Joanna Newsom on Fleet Foxes’ Robin Pecknold

“One of the things I was thinking about as I was writing the songs that I was going to play for the tour with [Joanna Newsom] was, ‘If Paul Newman wrote songs, what kind of songs would Paul Newman write?’” – Fleet Foxes’ Robin Pecknold

“I made music with Trish, but I also made it for her. Without her, it’s a different take on a different meaning for me.” – Broadcast’s James Cargill on his late bandmate and romantic partner, Trish Keenan

“He talked about ending his life a lot, and that was a byproduct of his drug use and the fact that he felt like shit. But he was such a sweetheart, and I don’t think he wanted to die.” – David McConnell, Elliott Smith’s producer and friend

“I’m aware people think I’m a weirdo taking 20 hits of acid every day, and that gives you a certain freedom.” – The Flaming Lips’ Wayne Coyne

“Growing up, when I was very little I got into sports for a couple of years and then…I discovered Cocteau Twins, R.E.M., and, actually anything with a synthesizer I just wanted.” – Paul Rudd
