Sam Prekop

“The Silhouettes” MP3

Aug 09, 2010

Sam Prekop‘s first solo album in five years sees him taking an avant-garde/electronic path from his previous solo work and that of his main artistic outlet, The Sea and Cake. Old Punch Card was composed entirely with modular synthesizers. There’s only one usage of guitar, no percussion, and no vox.

Download track, “The Silouettes,” shows that the new sound fits him quite well. Old Punch Card streets September 7 via Thrill Jockey. In related news, SaC may have new material soon. Before that, the veteran group will tour with Broken Social Scene. Prekop plays guitar and sings on one song from Forgiveness Rock Record, which was produced by SaC/Tortoise percussionist, John McEntire.

Kathryn Calder‘s homemade-puppet video for “Slip Away” is extremely cute. There’s no way around it. The New Pornos member’s animated vid features a madcap UFO abduction, intergalactic bunny romance, yummy carrot cake, and some telescope-gazin’.

Watch above. It was directed by Dean Tzenos. Kathryn Calder’s debut full-length, Are You My Mother?, streets August 10, via File Under: Music. Listen to “Arrow” here.

The Foxymorons

“Skinny Cow Blues” MP3

Aug 07, 2010

Mesquite, Tx./Nashville, Tenn. pop-rockers The Foxymorons have mined the ‘90s in some damn catchy ways for three albums, and on August 24 they’ll issue their fourth long-player, Bible Stories, via Foxyphoton. It’s been five years since the release of Hesitation Eyes. It’s nice to know high school BFFs/co-band leaders, David Dewese and Jerry James, can still kick out a jangly-as-hell, Pavement-esque rocker like “Skinny Cow Blues.” The piano-led cut builds into something quite extraordinary.

(Trivia: Dewese & James started their own boutique clothing line, American Viceroy.) Catch this midtempo groove, dudes. Pre-order Bible Stories directly from the band here.

If indie-rock heavyweights Arcade Fire didn’t already reach the upper echelons of rock stardom, last night they cemented their legacy by playing at a little venue called Madison Square Garden. Congrats, folks. Vevo/YouTube streamed the whole gig, which was lensed by cult director Terry Gilliam.

If you missed the festivities, there are highlights from the webcast on YouTube, including Suburbs anthems “Empty Room,” “Ready to Start,” and “Rococo,” along with a funny backstage intro featuring Gilliam and some “robots.” Watch them all right here.

The Suburbs is out now via Merge. Check tour dates at AF’s website.

Sharon Van Etten

“Love More” MP3

Aug 06, 2010

Sharon Van Etten creates minimalistic folk-pop with her quiet, yet stentorian voice. Her sophomore LP, for Ba Da Bing!, epic, will street October 5. Van Etten will also join José González‘s reformed band, Junip, on her first nationwide tour this November.

Here’s the first single from the new release. It’s entitled “Love More” and sees the singer constructing some pretty damn lush arrangements. (Well, for a Van Etten tune.) The new full-length was recorded at Miner Street Studios in Philadelphia with Brian McTear. Van Etten’s first record, Because I Was In Love, dropped in 2009. It’s a great introduction to her sound and is available now via Language of Stone.

How to Dress Well

“You Won’t Need Me Where I’m Goin’” MP3

Aug 06, 2010

Lo-fi R&B musician/“post-Kantian philosophy” student How to Dress Well will unleash his debut album, Love Remains, on September 21 through Lefse. The vinyl streets in October. The album compiles and polishes some of the online-released, demo-like EPs Tom Krell released earlier this year. (Trivia: Krell now lives in Köln, Germany, but he’s originally from Brooklyn.)

One of Love Remains’ featured tunes is “You Won’t Need Me Where I’m Goin’,” which you can listen to now. It first appeared on HtDW’s Can’t See My Own Face - The Eternal Love 2 EP. It’s quite the sullen and wafting slow-burner. Krell sure has a haunting falsetto. Plus, I like the track’s ostensible play on this famous quote.

Robyn: “U Should Know Better” (Feat. Snoop Dogg) MP3 Stream

Whoa…and we thought “Hang With Me” was awesome. Here’s another new jam off Robyn‘s forthcoming Body Talk Pt. 2. This one features Snoop Dogg on the mic, spitting some gully-as-shit guest verses. It’s not their first track together (”Sexual Eruption” was quite the tune), but it’s a banger of the sexiest order. Stream below and see upcoming gigs at the Swedish singer’s MySpace. Pt. 2 drops September 6 in the U.K. via Island/Konichiwa. (Via Some Kind of Awesome.)
