Pantha du Prince

Animal Collective

“Welt Am Draht (Animal Collective Remix)” MP3

Jun 14, 2010

Animal Collective‘s Panda Bear (Noah Lennox) is pretty good friends with German minimal techno maven Hendrik Weber, a.k.a. Pantha du Prince. Lennox sang over Prince’s “Stick to My Side,” from his excellent Black Noise, and Prince remixed Animal Collective’s “Peacebone.”

Now, the Animal Collective crew have re-rubbed Black Noise‘s, “Welt Am Draht.” Their trippy take is available for free on Prince’s site. AC infuse low-end group chants and a percolating beats to the original’s chiming bells and spacey atmosphere. Trivia: “Welt Am Draft” translates to “World On Wires,” and is also the name of a German sci-fi movie directed by Rainer Fassbinder.

Black Noise is out now through Rough Trade. The following gigs are Pantha du Prince’s first in the U.S. in three years:

06-15 Washington, D.C. - U Street Music Hall
06-17 New York, NY - Santos Party House
06-18 Los Angeles, CA - The Echo

The Flaming Lips: “The Sparrow Looks Up at the Machine” [NSFW] Video

Oklahoma City psych-pop legends The Flaming Lips’ last Embryonic video was for the freaky cut “Powerless.” In that clip, a woman was tied to a chair and harassed by an evil monkey. That same gal (and monkey) are featured in “The Sparrow Looks at the Machine.” This time she’s nearly nude and being maimed by terrifying, hooded ladies. With all the bloody finger and toe-painting going on, this should definitely be filed in the NSFW category. Also, the furry vagina ball from the (even more NSFW) “Watching the Planets” video makes a cameo. Check out all the craziness above, via Pitchfork.tv.

Julian Lynch

“Sedan Delivery (Neil Young Cover)” MP3

Jun 10, 2010

A Fundamental Experiment is a Neil Young covers compilation assembled by similar artists in the underground music community (Julian Lynch, Real Estate/Ducktails member Matt Mondanile, Emeralds’ Sam Goldberg, and Sun Araw, etc) in order to raise funds for San Franciscan J.M.W., who plummeted from a three-story building in 2009 and is still having difficulty paying medical bills. You can purchase the comp here, and download Lynch’s rendition of “Sedan Delivery,” from Young’s 1979 Rust Never Sleeps, above. (Via Chocolate Bobka.)

“I Met Up With the King” MP3/Video

Jun 10, 2010

Klara and Johanna Söderberg of Stockholm’s First Aid Kit have an interesting mentor in Karin Dreijer Andersson. The Knife/Fever Ray frontwoman discovered the teenaged sister act through the Söderberg’s brother, who attends the same kindergarten as Andersson’s children. That relationship grew into the sibling’s fine 2009 EP, Drunken Trees. That was initially released via Dreijer Andersson’s own Swedish imprint, before being picked up by Wichita.

Their debut LP The Big Black & The Blue came out last month, and it’s an Appalachian-folk album that belies the ages of its creators. The melodies swoop down and up with fitful ease. For an example, download second single, “I Met Up With the King.” The melancholic, fairy tale-like video is below. The sisters Söderberg are currently touring North America for the first time. Check your upcoming chances to witness their acoustic splendour here. (Via Chromeowaves.)

Efterklang

Oh No Ono

Efterklang & Oh No Ono

Premiere: “Modern Drift (Oh No Ono - Cologne, Paris Remix)” / “Icicles (Efterklang Remix)” MP3

Jun 10, 2010

During these hot summer days, it may be tempting to eat all the ice cream bars by yourself, but remember kids, sharing is caring. (Also, if you ate a full box of ice cream bars you’d probably get sick.) Classically tinged Danish rockers Efterklang and Oh No Ono know these kinds of rules, so they’ve taken to remixing singles from each other’s 2010 LPs, Magic Chairs and Eggs.

Oh No Ono dials down Efterklang’s surging piano-electronic anthem “Modern Drift,” by focusing on the percussive build-up of the Magic Chairs cut. There’s a definite sway in that chamber-pop. And Efterklang re-rubs Eggs’ time signature-shifting “Icicles” into a frenzied, house-of-mirrors mélange. The remix ends up sounding like an Oh No Ono song on uppers.

Download Efterklang’s “Modern Drift (Oh No Ono - Cologne, Paris Remix)” above and Oh No Ono’s “Icicles (Efterklang Remix)” here.

Also, to celebrate the remix bartering and the start of ice cream season, both bands rode some bikes (and trikes) around Copenhagen for a silly fan clip. The Kristian Sidelmann and Andreas Munksgaard-directed clip features excerpts from the original versions of both tunes. Check it out below. Eggs (Friendly Fire) and Magic Chairs (4AD) are out now. Visit www.ohnoono.com and www.efterklang.net for upcoming tour dates.

Stars

“Wasted Daylight” MP3

Jun 09, 2010

You’ve hopefully listened to Stars’ synth-pop anthem “Fixed” and “We Don’t Want Your Body.” Now, check out the latest track from their fifth album, The Five Ghosts, which comes out June 22, via the Canadian band’s own imprint Soft Revolution (and outside Canada through Vagrant). It’s called “Wasted Daylight” and features Amy Milian’s cooing, post-coital vox. Unlike In Our Bedroom After the War, she’s not regretting her time knockin’ boots. Check Stars out on the road this summer. (Via My Old Kentucky Blog.)

Wavves

“Post Acid” MP3

Jun 09, 2010

San Diegan noise brigade Wavves are set to release “Post Acid” through Mountain Dew‘s Green Label Sound label. The bombastic summer anthem is off the band’s upcoming LP, King of the Beach. Download it right here. “Post Acid” is the first taste of the hi-fi sound frontman Nathan Williams intended the Wavvves follow-up to possess. He recorded the full-length at Oxford, Miss.‘s Sweet Tea Recording with Dennis Herring, producer of the last two Modest Mouse albums.

Sorta sounds like old school Blink 182. King of the Beach hits the pavement August 3 via Fat Possum. Check out the Cali-punk trio on tour all summer.

Wolf Parade: “Yulia” / “Cloud Shadow on the Mountain” MP3 Streams

Canuck indie-rockers Wolf Parade will release their third LP, EXPO 86, on June 29 via Sub Pop. We already gave you previews for “Ghost Pressure” and “What Did My Lover Say? (It Always Had to Go This Way).” Now, check out crisp streams of “Yulia” and “Cloud Shadow on the Mountain.” Thankfully, both add a lot more spunk in the Montréal group’s step.

“Yulia” and “Cloud Shadow” are available as a download set through iTunes.
