“Monolith” MP3

Sep 09, 2009

Montréal DJ Michael Silver (aka CFCF) is already a well-known remixer for the likes of HEALTH, Justice and Sally Shapiro. On October 27th, we’ll get to hear his own tunes with debut Continent, via Paper Bag. “Monolith” is an epic krautrock-infused dance floor jam that features intoxicating synthwork. Also, be on the lookout for The Explorers EP October 6th. That’s CFCF’s collaborative release with the disco ice princess Sally Shapiro.

Fredrik

“Locked In the Basement” MP3

Sep 09, 2009

The Malmö, Sweden chamber pop septet Fredrik will release its second album Trilogi this fall. Though the group started as a duo it has since grown to include players for banjo, clarinet, cello and icy synths, et al. After Fredrik’s debut, Na Na Ni, the group released a trilogy of rare 3” EPs. Trilogi collects them all.

The press release notes that they reference the horror scribe, H.P. Lovercraft. “The three EPs bear the titles ‘Holm,’ ‘Ava’ and ‘Ner,’ all fictional names roughly signifying ‘Frozen Forest Island,’ ‘Water Through Sound’ and ‘The Inside Underground.’ Together they represent a trilogy of contemporized viewpoints of the Lovecraftian dream passage—orientation at great cost and understanding at the risk of sanity.”

The debut sample track is the frosty, minimal “Locked In the Basement,” and approximates the sound of a winter draft blowing into a warm cottage. Trilogi comes out November 17th on The Kora.

Pugwash is the project of Dublin songwriters Thomas Walsh, Keith Farrell and Johnny Boyle Jr. The trio will be releasing its debut LP, entitled Giddy, in the U.S. through ADA. It was previously available in the U.K. on Andy Patridge’s (XTC) Ape House label.

Giddy culls togethers three Irish-only releases and one from a work slated for Spring 2010. Here’s the light-hearted video for “At the Sea.” The track is originally from Eleven Modern Antiquities and is co-written by Walsh & Partridge. Naturally, it sounds like a lost XTC cut. The video was directed by Room4’s Mr.Enda O’Looney. In addition to the band, Neil ‘Bez’ Hannon, Daragh Bohan and Sid & Harvey also guest star.

Los Campesinos!

“The Sea Is a Good Place to Think of the Future” MP3/Video

Sep 09, 2009

“The Sea Is a Good Place to Think of the Future” is a bit of a departure for the usually manic U.K. septet Los Campesinos!. The lyrcs focus on death and you can mull them all over at the band’s site. Though the LC! camp is showing a slightly grave side their melodies are still triumphant. While you’re downloading the new song, also check out the group’s accompanying beach video, co-directed by bassist Ellen Campesinos!.

In addition to upstaging ‘Beatles Day,’ the rambunctious group’s currently preparing for an October U.K. trek and holding a contest to give away a box filled with indie rock goodies collected during their North American tour. More details on the giveaway can be found here.

Make sure to get your live fix of the twosome when they join several other likeminded Friends of Friends artists, tomorrow night at L.A.‘s Echo. (Via XLR8R)

Fulton Lights

“Healing Waters” MP3

Sep 09, 2009

Andrew Spencer Goldman, a D.C.-area native, has spent the past seven years in Brooklyn creating experimental music under various names (Maestro Echoplex, John Guilt) and as a hired gun for The Hold Steady, Dälek and Wilco. Now he’s working under a new alias: Fulton Lights.

First, the soundscape rocker still has that free 2008 LP you can download here, called The Way We Ride. Other than that here’s a hazy taste of the Lights’ EP, Healing Waters, which is officially sold out of its “First Edition.” It’s now onto Version 2, via Catbird Records and features Goldman covering David Byrne‘s “Glass, Concrete and Stone.” (Via MBV)

The lispy Air single “Sing Sang Sung” gets an Electric Company-esque video this week. In the feather-light clip a black orb housing the Parisian twosome floats through a forest of female legs and jellyfish, a halcyonic ocean of diamonds and by a cloud of curious eyeballs. The cute/trippy video was directed and animated by Petra Mrkyz and François Moriceau. The synth-pop duo’s forthcoming album, Love 2 is due October 6th on Astralwerks. (Via Stereogum)

Peter Bjorn and John

Mick Boogie

“The Feeling (Ft. Buckshot, GZA & Tabi Bonney)”

Sep 08, 2009

Peter Bjorn and John‘s Living Thing has been out for quite a while but Mick Boogie isn’t through with it. The DJ and mixtape mashup artist lit up the blogosphere last year when he mashed up Jay-Z with Coldplay on Viva La Hova.

Now he’s got a brand new album to rerub and serve up totally free this week. The label lent him all the mastered stems from the Swedish pop group’s new record and Boogie called up his friends in the rap world. The results are sly dubbed Re-Living Thing. For the track on offer above, the mixtape curator brought together hip-hop vets Buckshot, GZA & Tabi Bonney to spit rhymes over the strange, West African-influenced “The Feeling.” The song was also remixed by Marco Polo. Download the full mixtape here. The tracklisting is below.
