Los Angeles’ Fitz & The Tantrums make soul music for the Millenial generation. The sextet just released a fun music video for single “Winds of Change.” The clip follows Fitz clicking off his various girlfriends (read: makeups and breakups). You can certainly hear the Motown and early Hall and Oates influence on this poppy cut. The Tantrums’ debut EP, Songs For A Break-Up Vol. 1 is out next week (August 11th) on Future Sounds. John Vanderslice

The Magik*Magik Orchestra

“Promising Actress” (Live with The Magik*Magik Orchestra) Video

This video is the last of Yours Truly‘s three part series with John Vanderslice & the Magik Magik Orchestra. Here, the San Francisco musician performs the David Lynch-inspired “Promising Actress” with string, piano, woodwind, and vocal accompanient. The dark Cellar Door track is very pretty when it gets all gussied up and proves once again that these two parties need to make a full-fledged album together. Romanian Names, JV’s seventh LP, is out now on Dead Oceans.

The Octopus Project

“Wet Gold” Video

Austin indie pop quartet The Octopus Project have a new video for “Wet Gold,” one of the featured clips on the last month’s Golden Beds Enhanced EP (Peek-A-Boo Records), which includes five different tunes and seven videos. “Wet Gold” was filmed in Galveston, TX, and directed by the Zellner Bros, who also helmed The Project’s “Truck.” Head Octopus, Josh Lambert noted about the making of the video in a press release:

”...it was wet and cold! We filmed it in Galveston a couple of months after the hurricane hit, so it was pretty devastated. The whole city (specifically the beach) was filled with debris and completely ripped up buildings—totally creepy. There was a pretty gnarly fog that day as well, so it only added to the eeriness. Making the video was a blast! Yvonne spent a couple of days learning semaphore and was spelling out “Wet Gold” when we filmed it. I’ve never been colder in my life. Standing in the ocean all day long in the middle of January wouldn’t be first on my list of things to do in the future, but we had a ton of fun nonetheless!” The band start their U.S. tour tonight. Tour dates are below:

08-04 - Baltimore, MD - Ottobar
08-05 - Chapel Hill, NC - Cat’s Cradle
08-06 - Atlanta, GA - Starbar
08-07 - New Orleans, LA - One Eyed Jack’s
08-08 - Houston, TX - Free Press Summer Fest
08-13 - Tucson, AZ - Plush
08-14 - Los Angeles, CA - The Troubadour
08-15 - San Francisco, CA - The Bottom of the Hill
08-17 - Portland, OR - Doug Fir
08-18 - Seattle, WA - Chop Suey
08-21 - Salt Lake City, UT - Urban Lounge
08-22 - Denver, CO - Larimer Lounge

A Camp

“Love Has Left the Room” Video

Stereogum debuted the music video for A Camp‘s “Love Has Left the Room” earlier this week. The melodramatic single from A Camp’s second album, Colonia, is a colorfully baroque Maximilla Lukacs and Sarah Flicker-directed project. Persson wanders by the ocean with a flower, a knife and the key to her heart (or room). The grainy Super 8 clip was filmed on the North Fork of Long Island, NY, at an old lighthouse owned by friends of the trio. The video makes reference to the work of Maya Deren, a female avante garde filmmaker who made some seminal pieces in the ’40s. There’s also a little bit of Roxy Music’s Siren in some of these shots.

Jon and Roy

“Another Noon” MP3

Aug 04, 2009

Victoria, B.C., duo, Jon and Roy actually are a trio. The folkie group consists of songwriter Jon Middleton (vocals, guitar) Roy Vizer (drums, percussion) and Ryan Tonelli (bass). Poor Ryan. Maybe a side project is in his future? Here’s the title track, “Another Noon.” The Nick Drakian song was recently featured in a VW commerical. Did somebody say déjà vu? Another Noon arrives October 13th on Burnside Distribution.

The Knux

“F*ck You” MP3

Aug 04, 2009

L.A.-via-New Orleans rap-rock duo The Knux are currently working on the follow-up to 2008’s critically acclaimed debut Remind Me In 3 Days. Here’s an intentional leak of the upcoming LP by the twosome. “F*ck You” finds the brotherly hip hop unit of Rah Al Milio and Krispy still mixes their Wu-Tang and Juvenile influences with The Strokes. The expletive-heavy “diss track” runs with some mad gully drums, warbled keyboards and a raw tape loop. You won’t hear this one at your nearest Starbucks anytime soon. The Knux might drop this and other new songs during this weekend’s Lollapalooza and the Rock the Bells summer festival circuit.

Palms

Josh Dibb

“Boundary Waters (Josh Dibb Remix)” MP3

Aug 04, 2009

Every band has “The Quiet One” and Animal Collective are no exception. Case in point: Josh Dibb (aka Deakin). Though he was a founding member of AC with Noah Lennox (Panda Bear) he’s been on hiatus from the group since early 2007, essentially missing the Collective’s rapid ascension in notoriety. The guitarist/vocalist’s new remix of Palms’ “Boundary Waters” is stunning, in that hazy, Feels-like way. He takes the noisy original and swathes a halcyonic glow over it. A little more information on Palms may be needed. The twosome comprises vocalist Nadja Korinth and multi-instrumentalist/singer Ryan Schaefer. Last year they put out their German music-influenced debut, It’s Midnight in Honolulu, on Nicolas Vernhes’ Rare Book Room imprint. Dibb’s version of “Boundary Waters” is just one of the many treatments on an upcoming EP, due out August 25th, also on Rare Book Room. In addition to reimaginings by Bradford Cox of Atlas Sound/Deerhunter, Gavin Russom and Matt Tong we have this drone-y reworking by the Animal Collective colleague.

Port O’Brien

“Sour Milk/Salt Water” MP3

Aug 04, 2009

We’ve told you about Port O’Brien‘s plans to put out their third album, Threadbare October 6th, via their new label, TBD. The follow-up to 2007’s All We Could Do Was Sing now has a new song to sink your teeth into while on the high seas. First on deck is “Sour Milk/Salt Water,” a strummy jangle-pop cut which hints at a slightly less unhinged LP. The Threadbare tracks were recorded in two locations: a bedroom in San Francisco with Papercuts’ Jason Quever, then in a fancy L.A. studio with Earlimart‘s Aaron Espinoza. “Sour Milk/Salt Water” seems to be from the latter with that hazy outro. Port O’Brien are also touring extensively this fall. Check out the dates here.
