Indie shmindie. Sometimes it’s hard to argue with cooperate sponsorship. Today, Virgin Mobile announced its free festival (September 25th at Merriweather Post Pavilion) and it is a dozy. The daylong genre-hopping festival will play host to buzz bands such as Sleigh Bells and Neon Indian, scene stalwarts LCD Soundsystem and M.I.A. and legends such as Pavement and Joan Jett. It's been a tragic year for Big Star. Following the sudden death of frontman Alex Chilton in March to a heart attack, their original bassist Andy Hummel passed away yesterday, after a long battle with cancer. Having penned some of the groups more beloved tunes, including "India" from #1 Record, and "Way Out West" off of Radio City, Hummel quit the band prior to Third/Sister Lovers. More
