When Slowdive reunited in 2014 for a round of well-received shows, it wasn't clear if they would release any new music. Sure enough, just like their shoegaze and dream-pop peers Lush (who released the Blind Spot EP last year and have since broken up again), Swervedriver (who released I Wasn't Born to Lose You in 2015) and Ride (who are releasing Weather Diaries later this year), Slowdive have regaled us with their first new album since 1995's Pygmalion. To reiterate how long ago that was, Bill Clinton was the U.S. President and the big news was the O.J. Simpson trial. Perhaps it's that 22 year distance that has confounded Rachel Goswell, who ranted on Twitter about the album's (let's face it) inevitable pre-release leak a few weeks ago, though it should be noted that she's made a lot of music since then both with Neil Halstead in Mojave 3 and on her own as well. Nevertheless, regale is indeed accurate here as it is an absolute treat to hear them in such great form, almost as if they had released this in 1994 sandwiched between the dream-pop majesty of Souvlaki and Pygmalion (really a Neil Halstead solo album under the Slowdive name). "Sugar for the Pill," the most recent song to be released to the public before the album's release date, swirls, cascades, and hits just like something on Souvlaki, while the meditative, repetitive lull of the closing "Falling Ashes" sounds like where Pygmalion left off. With an album this strong, we can only hope that they continue on and keep making more music.
