Amanda Palmer Revels in a Land “Down Under”

The always extravagant, eternally shameless piano/ukulele extraordinaire Amanda Palmer has unearthed inspiration for her latest solo project in a far, far east corner of the world: Australia. On Amanda Palmer Goes Down Under, due out January 21, the innovative solo artist known for her theatrical performances and work with cabaret-punk duos The Dresden Dolls and Evelyn Evelyn gets part funky, part fresh, but mostly irreverent for the Aussies—and we wouldn’t have (or expect) it any other way. Keeping to the national theme, the album was recorded in Australia and New Zealand and features covers of Down Under natives Nick Cave and Peter Jefferies.

Today, Palmer gives us a bit more than a sneak peak of the lively, almost-tropical album with a free stream of “Map of Tasmania,” which is not so much about the island as it is about how women should maintain their lady parts. Leave it to Palmer to kick off 2011 with an updated “girl power” anthem for the new generation of independently minded females.
