Animal Collective Oppose Seal Hunting in PETA Ad
"I scuba dive, so I like marine animals a lot." - Brian Weitz ("Geologist")
It's no big secret that Animal Collective dig furry creatures big and small. After all, during their formative years they would often don animal masks onstage. Now they're putting that love for the animal kingdom into action.
Animal Collective's Fall Be Kind EP is dropping November 9th, six days before the start of the Canadian seal hunting season. In response, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has recruited the band to oppose the tradition of slaughter in the video ad below. Avey Tare, Panda Bear, and Geologist have some tough words for Canadian hunters in the 1:23 minute video.
In the clip we learn about Brian "Geologist" Weitz's history as a college student studying biology and environmental policy. "We all really like animals and seals, especially," he states. Weitz also makes a good counterpoint to those that argue for tradition: "We owe it to ourselves as a species and as stewards of this planet to say that some progress is to be expected. Slavery was a tradition too, that doesn't mean [it was a good tradition]."
Noah "Panda Bear" Lennox chimes in by noting that there's plenty of "cruelty-free clothing" available to purchase. There's also some bloody footage of a seal getting clubbed to drive home the point that this is a terrible practice. (Via I Guess I'm Floating/P4K)
