Arcade Fire have shared a strange video for “Chemistry.” It features a dog waiter (well, a man with a computer-generated dog head) who falls in love with a cat (a woman in a white dress with a computer-generated cat head) in a restaurant full of sharks. Eventually they are fighting a robot shark in space and the whole thing climaxes in New Orleans during Mardi Gras. Ray Tintori directed the clip, which was animated by Starburns Industries, who have worked on Rick & Morty, Charlie Kaufman’s Anomalisa, and Community (the company is named after a character from that show). Tootie Tootz of the reality TV show Big Freedia: Queen of Bounce plays the cat’s body. Watch it below, followed by the band’s upcoming tour dates.

Win Butler had this to say about the video in a press release: “We’ve been big fans of Ray’s work since his early videos and there was talk of collaborating during ‘The Suburbs’ shoot—we were going to film it in New Orleans but then it got moved to Austin at the last minute, and Ray was caught up working on Beasts of the Southern Wild. So it was very full circle to finally be working with him in New Orleans during Mardi Gras. There is a playful, carnivalesque energy to the song; to capture that by filming literally during carnival felt right.”

“Chemistry” is featured on Arcade Fire’s latest album, Everything Now, which was released last July via Columbia. Read our review of Everything Now.
