Björk has released more information about her Biophilia project, following the release of single “Crystalline” over the weekend. The project includes an album, new website, custom-made instruments, live shows, workshops, and a documentary. Working with an expansive team including scientists, inventors, web developers, and writers, the project was created out of investigating the relationships between music and the natural world. The live show will premiere June 30 at the Manchester International Festival. Björk’s participation includes 6 performances over 3 weeks in which the accompanying Biophilia Apps will be introduced, as well as the invented instruments.
The album will be released in regular formats later this year. The tour schedule comprises of a three-year tour of six-week residencies in 8 different cities. Björk will use the apps (one made for each song) to perform using her unique instruments, including pendulum-harps, a midi-controlled pipe organ, and an award winning Icelandic female choir, among many other interesting creations. Audiences will be kept to fewer than 2,000 people, and the venues will be museums and other intimate locations rather than traditional music venues. A documentary on the entire project is being made by Pulse Films, including the origination of the project idea, and all the steps to create the many parts of Biophilia.
