Damon Albarn—he of Blur, The Good The Bad & The Queen, Gorillaz, and Mali Music—has formed a band with drummer Tony Allen, and bassist Flea—who has been known to hang out with Thom Yorke’s Atoms for Peace when not working on his day job in Red Hot Chili Peppers. How do any of these people find time to sleep?
The still unnamed band has an album that’s near completion. Said Albarn in an interview with Stuff.co.nz, “The album that is three-quarters finished is another band with Tony Allen; centred around what he does. But this time it’s him and me and Flea from The Chili Peppers and some of my favourite African musicians will be involved also. Flea of course is an anagram for Fela and Flea is so into this music, so that’s been great.”
In addition to the Allen/Flea project, Albarn goes on to confirm that he is working on new Gorillaz material. “I guess it’s my love letter to America,” he said of the project. “I used to be baffled by this place, and I guess I still am in some ways. America confused me enormously. But right now, with all that’s going on, this is a good place to be and this has been a great tour.” He’s also working on a new The Good The Bad & The Queen album, would like to one day release a solo album of ballads, and do more film scoring. Let’s hope he also finds time to record a new Blur album in there somewhere!
