Florence + the Machine (aka Florence Welch and backing band) has shared a new song, “Jenny of Oldstones.” It debuted during the closing credits of last night’s new Game of Thrones episode and is a version of a song Podrick Payne (played by Daniel Portman) sang on the show earlier in the episode. Thomas Bartlett produced the song, which was written by Game of Thrones composer Ramin Djawadi, Dan Weiss and David Benioff (creators of the TV show), and George R.R. Martin (Game of Thrones’ original creator/author). Listen to it below, followed by Florence + the Machine’s upcoming tour dates.
Benioff and Weiss had this to say about the song in a press release: “We’ve always been huge fans of Florence’s music, and the Season 2 trailer with her song ‘Seven Devils’ was possibly the most powerful we’ve ever had. So the opportunity to hear her otherworldly voice on our show was always at the forefront of our minds. We’re still pleasantly shocked that she agreed to sing ‘Jenny of Oldstones,’ and we’re in love with the result.”
Welch had this to say: “When I first heard the song it sounded like a Celtic lullaby to me. Celtic music has always been in my blood, so I felt like I could do something with it. The magic and ritual in Game of Thrones, not to mention the costumes, have always appealed to me. I am honored to be a part of the final season.”
Florence + the Machine released a new album, High As Hope, last June via Republic.
In January Welch shared two new songs not featured on High As Hope, the James Ford-produced “Moderation” (which was one of our Songs of the Week) and the Daniel Siskin-produced “Haunted House.” In January Welch also shared a live video where she performed with New Zealand singer/songwriter/guitarist Marlon Williams in Sydney, Australia (he was her opening act), performing his duet “Nobody Gets What They Want Anymore.”
