The nominations for the 86th annual Academy Awards were announced today in an early morning press conference. Not too many surprises, American Hustle garnered nominations in several categories, including Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Supporting Actress. Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine resulted in nods for both its lead and supporting actresses and for best original screenplay. And Sandra Bullock’s one-woman show Gravity seems almost guaranteed to take home an award.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Karen O was nominated for “The Moon Song” from Her, going up against U2’s “Ordinary Love” from Mandella’s Long Walk of Freedom. Owen Pallett and Arcade Fire (credited to William Butler and Owen Pallett) were also nominated for their score for Her.

Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros’ Alex Ebert won the Golden Globe this past Sunday for best score for All Is Lost, a movie that features barely any dialogue, but did not receive a nomination today.

Other notable snubs include Robert Redford’s nearly wordless performance in All Is Lost, Inside Llewyn Davis for Best Picture (or star Oscar Isaac for Best Actor, I mean, he is named Oscar after all), Daniel Brühl for Best Supporting Actor for Rush, Tom Hanks for Best Actor for Captain Phillips (although he’s already won two Oscars), Emma Thompson for Best Actress for Saving Mr. Banks, Michael B. Jordan for Best Actor for Fruitvale Station, Adèle Exarchopoulos for Best Actress for Blue is the Warmest Colour, Spike Jonze for Best Director for Her, and no doubt others. But it was a very competitive year, especially in the acting categories, and it’s hard to say who should have been cut in favor of any of these snubs, although surely the brilliant Meryl Streep doesn’t need yet another award nomination.
