Halloween 2013 Questionnaire: Midlake

"I tried to dress up as a mummy when I was about 7. I used toilet paper and was wearing long johns underneath. By the end of the trick-or-treating, I was just a kid in long johns." - McKenzie Smith

We sent out the same set of Halloween-related questions to a bunch of different musicians. All Halloween week we are posting their responses. Here are some spooky answers from Eric Pulido, McKenzie Smith, and Jesse Chandler of Midlake.

Eric Pulido:

What was the best Halloween costume you ever dressed up in and/or what was the best Halloween you ever had?

I was Kenny Rogers and my wife was Dolly Parton. “Islands in the Stream” sung on cue included!

What was the worst Halloween costume you ever dressed up in and/or what was the worst Halloween you ever had?

I was Bill Clinton one year and the mask was hot and suffocating. I ended up wearing it over my head and looked two-faced, which is probably more fitting when impersonating a president. ;)

What do you plan to dress up as for Halloween this year?

Unfortunately as myself…we’ll be playing a show. :( Maybe we should all dress up like each other!?

What have you always wanted to dress up as for Halloween but never had the guts and/or resources to pull off?

Mr. Clean.

What’s your favorite scary movie?

Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory (those damn Oompa-Loompas still scare the hell out of me).

What’s your favorite spooky song?

“I Put a Spell On You” by Screamin’ Jay Hawkins.

McKenzie Smith:

What was the best Halloween costume you ever dressed up in and/or what was the best Halloween you ever had?

Sounds cliché, but the ‘80s rocker (with pic included) was my favorite ever. I was wearing my wife’s (girlfriend at the time!) pants.

What was the worst Halloween costume you ever dressed up in and/or what was the worst Halloween you ever had?

I tried to dress up as a mummy when I was about 7. I used toilet paper and was wearing long johns underneath. By the end of the trick-or-treating, I was just a kid in long johns.

What do you plan to dress up as for Halloween this year?

Unfortunately nothing! We will be in Brussels on tour and I don’t think we will have the time to hit the costume store!

What have you always wanted to dress up as for Halloween but never had the guts and/or resources to pull off?

Pee-wee Herman.

What’s your favorite scary movie?

The Changeling (the original from 1980).

What’s your favorite spooky song?

“Wrecking Ball” by Miley Cyrus.

Jesse Chandler:

What was the best Halloween costume you ever dressed up in and/or what was the best Halloween you ever had?

My best Halloween costume was when I was 5 as a blue Care Bear. My parents custom-made my costume. Woodstock, NY was a great place to go trick-or-treating, because all the shops would stay open late and there would be so many kids milling around that it made our little 4,000-person town feel like a mini-city! I still don’t understand what wax lips are supposed to be-there would always be a store that would give those out.

What was the worst Halloween costume you ever dressed up in and/or what was the worst Halloween you ever had?

Worst Halloween experience was when I was about 14 or 15 and thought I was “too cool for Halloween.” So I stayed home and brooded while my brothers went out and got buckets of candy. Boy, was I sorry. Side note: that same night our house got egged by a wild pack of teenagersyou know who you are!! ;)

What do you plan to dress up as for Halloween this year?

This year I don’t really have plans to dress up, as we’ll be in Brussels, where as far as I know Halloween is not celebrated. My youngest brother, however, will be there, and I’m expecting him to show up in full costume! You might see me dressed up as a runner on the streets of Brussels that day, though!

What have you always wanted to dress up as for Halloween but never had the guts and/or resources to pull off?

I’ve always wanted to dress up as a stalk of celery, but I have a good friend in NYC that beat me to it.

What’s your favorite scary movie?

Favorite Halloween film is either It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown or The Shining.

What’s your favorite spooky song?

Favorite spooky song is either the entire soundtrack to The Wicker Man or “Black Sabbath” by Black Sabbath.
