We sent out the same set of Halloween-related questions to a bunch of different musicians. All Halloween week we are posting their responses. Here are some spooky answers from Radar Brothers, William Tyler, First Rate People, and The Teen Age.

Radar Brothers

Jim Putnam

What was the best Halloween costume you ever dressed up in and/or what was the best Halloween you ever had?

I was Cheez Whiz Christ my second year in college. I had the long hair for it, and I gave out Triscuit crackers with Cheez Whiz as a Communion sort of thing.

What was the worst Halloween costume you ever dressed up in and/or what was the worst Halloween you ever had?

I ate too many mind-altering drugs the same night, and I made the mistake of looking in the mirror with said costume on. I decided I was dying and I developed a full-blown panic disorder that lasted through the following year.

What do you plan to dress up as for Halloween this year?

Either the Just For Men beard guy, or Honey Boo Boo.

What have you always wanted to dress up as for Halloween but never had the guts and/or resources to pull off?

Predator or Klaus Kinski in Aguirre, the Wrath of God.

What’s your favorite scary movie?

Don’t Look Now.

What’s your favorite spooky song?

“Hey” by Butthole Surfers.

What was the best Halloween costume you ever dressed up in and/or what was the best Halloween you ever had?

I will be honest. I don’t enjoy Halloween. I think it’s the ultimate extrovert holiday and I am a stubborn introvert. That said, I have always tried to be a good sport. I think the last time I actually dressed up, I rented a full-body gorilla outfit and went to a party and no one knew who I was. That was pretty fun.

What was the worst Halloween costume you ever dressed up in and/or what was the worst Halloween you ever had?

When I was a kid I would always dress up as a historical figure-one year Christopher Columbus, I think another year I was Lincoln. Kids never seemed to ‘get’ those and I feel like I got short-changed on candy a lot. I think one year every house we hit for trick-or-treating gave us stuff like carrots and apples, healthy stuff. That felt deflating.

What do you plan to dress up as for Halloween this year?

I will be in Durham, so probably as Dean Smith.

What have you always wanted to dress up as for Halloween but never had the guts and/or resources to pull off?

A bear. That year where I rented the gorilla outfit, honestly I really wanted a bear outfit but they were all rented out. So I have to accomplish that goal.

What’s your favorite scary movie?

The Shining.

What’s your favorite spooky song?

“Hamburger Lady” by Throbbing Gristle.

What was the best Halloween costume you ever dressed up in and/or what was the best Halloween you ever had?

All year I grew a beard just for the payoff of shaving the mustache and going out as an Old Order Mennonite (straw hat and dark suit included of course).

What was the worst Halloween costume you ever dressed up in and/or what was the worst Halloween you ever had?

I wore eyeliner and furry horns for a costume one year which was kind of kinky. Picture attached.

What do you plan to dress up as for Halloween this year?

This year my friends are going as Ripley and the Alien respectively. I’ll be John Hurt’s character, Kane, with an alien popping from my chest.

What have you always wanted to dress up as for Halloween but never had the guts and/or resources to pull off?

I usually play it by ear, but my pal Ahren mentioned getting the full-out astronaut-in-the-EVA-suit look, which I agree would look dope. You would probably have to rock a diaper, though, which has its pros and cons.

What’s your favorite scary movie?

Jon and I agree that The Shining is the ultimate creepy classic, to which he adds Caché by Michael Haneke. I just watched The Conjuring last night too, which had such a great classic Exorcist vibe and sent me into a spiral of YouTubing videos on the occult, which properly freaked me.

What was the best Halloween costume you ever dressed up in and/or what was the best Halloween you ever had?

Bill: I made a pretty good Ghostbuster when I was like eight years old. I have Halloween parties at my loft in Brooklyn and last year we had Fleetwood Mac, Velvet Underground, and Smashing Pumpkins cover bands. That was hard to beat.

Jon: My best costume was Ron Goldman after being murdered by O.J. I was in seventh grade; it was very topical. My best Halloween was when I made out with my friend’s sister while on acid in some dance club.

What was the worst Halloween costume you ever dressed up in and/or what was the worst Halloween you ever had?

Bill: I did a pretty half-assed Misfits member last year, with a devilock that didn’t really stay down.

Jon: Worst costume is no costume. And one time I puked pumpkin seeds while riding my bike.

What do you plan to dress up as for Halloween this year?

Bill: No idea. I should just be a Ghostbuster again.

Micah: I’m going to dress up as our bass player Bill.

Jon: Rebel Without a Pulse (zombie James Dean).

What’s your favorite scary movie?

Bill: The Excorcist.

Micah: The Shining.

Jon: Dead Alive.

What’s your favorite spooky song?

Bill: Bobby “Boris” Pickett, “Monster Mash.”

Micah: Joy Division, “She’s Lost Control.”

Jon: Tracy Jordan, “Werewolf Bar Mitzvah.”
