Hot Chip founding member/lead vocalist Alexis Taylor is releasing a new solo album, Beautiful Thing, on April 20 via Domino. Previously he shared a video for its first single, title track “Beautiful Thing” (it was one of our Songs of the Week). Now he has shared another song from the album, “Oh Baby,” via a funny little video directed by Simon Owens in which he has large eyeballs that disconnect from his face and go on adventures. Watch it below. The song features John Coxon (of Spring Heel Jack and Spiritualized) and was produced by Taylor’s Hot Chip bandmate Joe Goddard. Taylor has also announced some North American tour dates, which are below too.

Taylor had this to say about the song in a press release: “‘Oh Baby’ is an exuberant love song, with a nod to the music I love by the likes of Alex Chilton and Paul McCartney. It was produced by Joe Goddard and features John Coxon on guitar and some Hot Chip band members playing on it too. I wrote it in about the time it takes to listen to it, and the finished performance was recorded live in the studio. The video by Simon Owens shows my eyeballs coming out of my head and having a whirlwind romance with each other.”

Unlike 2016’s Piano, which was a solo piano affair (and was accompanied by 2017’s Life With(out) Piano), Beautiful Thing is more in line with his electronic work with Hot Chip. Tim Goldsworthy (of the labels Mo Wax and DFA, as well as the band UNKLE) produced the album, marking the first time Taylor has worked with an outside producer on a solo album (this is his fourth solo full-length).

A previous press release described the album as such: “The upcoming record is a bold and confident step forward for Alexis both sonically and in terms of his songwriting abilities. It has electronic thrills, dark spaces, memories of dancefloors, heartfelt writing; it’s composed, it’s improvised, it’s accidental, it’s strange, but it’s also very immediate. It is a beautiful thing itself: a moving, modern and unique sounding long-player, to get lost in on repeated deep listens.”
