If you support Under the Radar‘s Patreon page at the minimum contribution of at least $1.00 a month you get access to our Patreon-only feed featuring exclusive content only available to Patreon supporters. And our friends at Marathon Artists have also donated a vinyl copy of the new album by London-based band Childhood, Universal High, to give away to one lucky Under the Radar Patreon supporter. One runner-up will get a CD copy. The album came out today and was our Album of the Week. We’ll be picking one random Patreon supporter next Friday, July 28 to win the album.
Childhood released their promising debut album, Lacuna, in 2014. And before that we did a Pleased to Meet You feature on them in 2013. Previously they shared a video for Universal High‘s first single, the soulful “California Light,” as well as the audio for “Cameo.”
Universal High was recorded at Maze Studios, Atlanta across the summer of 2016. Ben H Allen III (Gnarls Barkley, Animal Collective, Deerhunter) produced the album. A previous press release described the album as such: “You could be forgiven for branding Universal High a rebirth. In places almost unrecognizable from the dub-charged psychedelic indie of their debut, the new sound swells from the southern streets in which it came to life, caked in the ‘70s soul of The Isley Brothers, Curtis Mayfield, and Shuggie Otis.”
Childhood frontman Ben Romans-Hopscraft had this to say about the album in a previous press release: “Universal High represents many things to us as a band. It signifies change, both musically and mentally whilst also revisiting influences that confounded our interest in music in the first place. What I think is noticeable is the direct nature of the songs and its influences. Being surrounded by soul music, classic pop songs, and music with any form of groove all my life, these influences began to speak for themselves within these new songs we were writing.”
