Prolific Melbourne psych-rock adventurers King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard have already stated their intentions to release five albums this year and they already released three: Flying Microtonal Banana, back in February, Murder of the Universe, back in June, and in August Sketches of Brunswick East, which features Los Angeles’ Mild High Club, all via ATO. Now they have shared an animated video for Sketches track “Countdown.” Jason Galea directed the hand drawn video, which a press release says “took close to 300 hours and 2453 frames of drawing to complete.” Watch it below, followed by the band’s upcoming tour dates.
Sketches of Brunswick East is “an examination of (and homage to)” the Melbourne suburb where the band write and record in their own studio and its title is inspired by Miles Davis’ Sketches of Spain. Frontman Stu Mackenzie had this to say about the album in a previous press release: “We’re always walking up and down the street all the time. Going to get coffee, lugging amps, just constantly wandering Lygon Street and spending a lot of time looking out into the distance, seeing the terrain change as new apartment buildings are erected, watching the cranes build bigger cranes. In that respect, perhaps it represents greater changes that are happening in the wider world, and this is our attempt to find beauty within a place that we spend so much time.”
