Australian experimental musician Kirin J Callinan is releasing a new album, Bravado, on June 9 via Terrible Records. Previously he shared the slightly NSFW and highly amusing Cuba-shot video for “S.A.D.” (which stands for “Song About Drugs”). He also shared the album’s title track and a funny mockumentary video for Bravado track “Telling Me This.” Now he has shared two more songs from the album, “Down 2 Hang,” which features James Chance, and “Living Each Day,” which features Connan Mockasin. The former is mainly a list of things “down to hang” and features the lyric: “Like Jesus, she is down to hang.” Listen to both below, followed by his upcoming tour dates.

Callinan had this to say about “Living Each Day” in a press release: “The reason the recording sounds so damn expensive is Aaron Cupple’s production prowess coupled with Mark Ronson’s generosity, granting us access gratis to his London studio for the day, tracking the drums, guitars & vox with his Grammy award winning in-house Italian Ricardo Damian. Back south o the hemisphere, I then popped in to visit Connan Mockasin one heady afternoon on the north island o New Zealand, in a shack at the time, and coerced him into laying down a cheeky vocal refrain + inspired flashes of soulful, ad-lib genius.”

“Down 2 Hang” was recorded in Montreal with six-time Grammy nominated producer Damian Taylor. Kirin had this to say about recording the song and working with Taylor: “He introduced himself after seein’ me open up for Kid Congo Powers, we tracked it the following day; the instrumental growing from a live jam, yours true on gat n noise & Damian on modular synth. The lead vocal was performed just once, live take, first take, only take, much of the lyric improvised, but once in the can we knew it was what it was, that it was it.”

Bravado features a slew of other special guests, including Weyes Blood, Mac DeMarco, Owen Pallett, Sean Nicholas Savage, Jorge Elbrecht, and others. The “Telling Me This” mockumentary was a Behind the Music style spoof called Off the Record that featured Callinan talking about the song, along with fellow musicians, including Mac DeMarco, Mark Ronson, Weyes Blood, Jack Black, Jay Watson (Tame Impala, Gum, POND), Sebastien Teller, Ladyhawke, and others. Callinan’s debut album, Embracism, came out in 2013 and in 2015 he released a video for a new song featuring Connan Mockasin, “The Teacher,” which isn’t featured on the new album.
