A recording of an Elliott Smith song few people have heard of, "Misery Let Me Down," has been found after being missing for more than a decade.
In 1997 Elliott Smith performed a session at WMUC-FM, a college radio station at the University of Maryland. The live music program, called Third Rail Radio, recorded the 10-song set, along with "Misery Let Me Down" which he played before the performance broadcast. The performance was then transferred to a MiniDisc and added to the station's library.
As years passed, the disc went missing and it was thought that it would be lost forever.
So how was it found? A former WMUC DJ, Ben Weisholtz, found the recording in his MiniDisc player that he was planning to sell on eBay. It was in his possession the whole time. Weisholtz sent to disc back to the college radio station. Since then, the performance has been added to the WMUC digital archive for safekeeping.
We have an in-depth article about the late singer/songwriter in our 10th Anniversary Issue issue. Check out the preview of the article here.
