Waxahatchee (aka Katie Crutchfield) is releasing a new album, Out in the Storm, on July 14 via Merge. Previously she shared a video for its first single, “Silver.” She also shared a demo for “Silver” via the “Our First 100 Days” anti-Donald Trump project. Now she has shared the album’s rocking opening track, “Never Been Wrong.” Check it out below, followed by her upcoming tour dates.

Crutchfield had this to say about the song in a press release: “Being straightforward has always been more natural for me, and it was incredibly cathartic. It reminded me of being a teenager again, how I wrote songs then, and how huge that felt. It’s like that moment you walk away from a fight and you realize all of the things you should have said. This record is me saying all of that out loud alone as a personal practice. It’s sad and it’s angry, and I think being both at the same time proved to be a powerful motivation for me.”

Out in the Storm was recorded in December 2016 at Philadelphia’s Miner Street Recordings with producer/mixer/engineer John Agnello (Dinosaur Jr., Sonic Youth). Katie Crutchfield’s band for this album was sister Allison Crutchfield on keyboards and percussion, Katherine Simonetti on bass, and Ashley Arnwine on drums; with Katie Harkin, touring guitarist with Sleater-Kinney, also contributing lead guitar. The band recorded most of the album live, resulting in what a previous press release said is “one of Waxahatchee’s most guitar-driven releases to date.”

There will be a special limited-edition deluxe 2-LP version of the album that includes “an exclusive bonus LP of demo versions of the entire album pressed on cloud white vinyl,” plus a poster.
