Lush Announce New EP and Share Video for “Out of Control,” First New Music in 20 Years
Blind Spot EP Due Out April 22 via Edamame

Brand new Lush music! The moment fans of the ‘90s shoegazing legends have been waiting two decades for is here. Lush have shared their first new single since 1996. Below is the video for “Out of Control.” It had previously been revealed that the reunited band were releasing a new EP this spring and now said EP has been officially announced. The Blind Spot EP is due out April 22 on the band’s own Edamame label. It contains four brand new tracks, opening with “Out of Control” (the full tracklist is below). Martin Masai Andersen and Kim Thue directed the “Out of Control” video, which doesn’t feature the band but focuses on a teenage boy.
The good news is that “Out of Control” sounds like vintage Lush, perhaps from the era of arguably their best album, 1994’s Split. It doesn’t have the rawness of their earlier work, nor the more straightforward Britpop-stylings of their final album, 1996’s Lovelife. The track finds a perfect middle ground and it’s also a delight to hear singer/guitarist Miki Berenyi’s angelic vocals again. The band also features singer/guitarist Emma Anderson and bassist Philip King.
Berenyi commented on the EP in a press release: “It certainly took some time to set up, but once we were in the studio, everything came together incredibly quickly. It was great fun! It’s been a long time since I’ve written Lush lyrics, and I realized early on with this EP that what I wrote about then is not what I feel comfortable writing about now. My perspective, and what is close to my heart, has changed, and I think that’s conveyed in the songs.”
King added: “I know I’m biased, but I work for a music magazine and so much of the music I hear played in the office sounds non-descript or derivative. Emma has this way of writing unusual chord changes and manages to weave lovely melodies over the top, and it immediately sounds distinctive, like Lush.”
The band recorded the EP last summer. The EP’s songs were co-written by the band’s co-founders Anderson and Berenyi and Blind Spot is co-produced by Jim Abbiss and Ladytron’s Daniel Hunt.
At the end of September Lush announced they were reuniting and some shows in London (May 6 and 7 at the Roundhouse) and New York (September 14 at Terminal 5) were announced. A full U.S. tour and some festival appearances (including Coachella) have been announced since then. The dates are below again.
Lush were one of the originators and main icons of the shoegazing genre, along with Slowdive, Ride, My Bloody Valentine, and Swervedriver (who have all reformed in recent years). Lush released three albums in the ‘90s, but split up after the 1996 suicide of drummer Chris Acland. Their final show was in Tokyo, Japan in September 1996. Justin Welch of Britpop icons Elastica will be playing drums at their reunion shows.
Lush also recently released Chorus, a box set collecting all their albums, as well as various B-sides, demos, radio sessions, remixes, and unreleased tracks. Read our review of Chorus here.
