Trip-hop pioneers Massive Attack released their acclaimed third album, Mezzanine, over 21 years ago, in April 1998. Now they have announced a previously unreleased dub version of the album put together by Mad Professor in 1998 will finally be coming out. It’s titled Massive Attack vs Mad Professor Part II (Mezzanine Remix Tapes) and is due out on vinyl on September 20 via UMe. A press release says it includes reworked versions of “Teardrop,” “Angel,” and “Inertia Creeps,” as well as rarities “Wire” and “Superpredators.” Above is the cover art. No music from the release has been shared as of yet. A remastered version of Mezzanine is coming out next Friday (August 23) on 2CD and digital and the Mad Professor reworks will be included on there as well, but Massive Attack vs Mad Professor Part II (Mezzanine Remix Tapes) will be a separate vinyl release.
Mad Professor previously did a dub version of Massive Attack’s album previous to Mezzanine, 1994’s Protection. It was titled No Protection and came out in 1995. So it makes sense he was recruited again for Mezzanine and it’s too bad his dub version of the album wasn’t released back in 1998. Massive Attack’s Robert Del Naja designed the cover art for Massive Attack vs Mad Professor Part II (Mezzanine Remix Tapes) with Tom Hingston and it features original artwork from Brute!‘s Aiden Hughes.
