Midlake Make Long-Awaited Return With New LP
The Courage of Others Out February 2nd on Bella Union
Oct 27, 2009 Midlake
Midlake has been toiling away on the follow-up to 2006’s time-warped The Trials of Van Occupanther for so long that they were actually interviewed in both Under the Radar‘s “Most Anticipated Albums of 2008” and “Most Anticipated Albums of 2009” issues. In fact, in a recent e-mail interview with this site, guitarist Eric Pulido joked about the slow crawl towards an eventual release date: “Unfortunately with release schedules and such, it’s looking like February 2010. If I’m not mistaken, (if we are indeed an anticipated album for next year) this will be the third year in a row that we’re one of the most anticipated albums for Under the Radar. Shall we celebrate with a cover?!”
Well, the Texas fivesome Midlake do indeed have a new album in February, February 2nd via Bella Union (February 1 in the U.K. and Europe) to be exact. Album number three is still titled The Courage of Others and that’s the moody cover above. The tracklist is below. You’ll notice that a recent live favorite, “Children of the Grounds,” is still on the docket.
The 11 tracks on Courage were written by Tim Smith and produced by Midlake at their new custom-built studio in Denton, TX. The band’s lineup remains the same: singer Tim Smith, Paul Alexander on bass, drummer McKenzie Smith, and guitarists Eric Pulido and Eric Nichelson.
A Bella Union press release notes that the new LP will switch out the ‘70s soft-rock vibe of The Trials of Van Occupanther, for a more traditional folk influence. In a statement, Pulido says, “We didn’t want to make the same album as Van Occupanther, so we carried on moving and creating and pushing for a newer sound and emotion.” Sounds good to us. (Maybe that cover shoot will be in order after all.)
In anticipation of The Courage of Other’s release, Midlake will play a a few gigs in the U.S. South and in the U.K. Those dates are below. Later in the year, they’ll play SXSW and tour all over.
